  1. Selective fire C96s didn't exist when these pistols were bought. Mauser only built a prototype until 1926/7. And didn't market one until 1932

  2. Not at reaistic pistols ranges. A Gendarme is unlikely to be shooting at anybody more than 15m away.

  3. The French may have ordered these pistols from Mauser. But Germany paid for them, either directly or included in the reparations imposed at Versailles.
