  1. I've never seen any field reports of the Austen's reliability. But during dirt, mud and sand testing it was more unreliable than than the original Sten. It was on par with the Thompson. And the MP40 style enclosed spring/firing pins have to be kept very clean to run properly. So not ideal for the jungle. Personally I think that Australian authorities overhyped the Austen as an "super Sten" so users were bound to be disappointed disappointed in it, even without the Owen Gun to compare it too.
