  1. The P-14 (or Rifle No.3) was not well liked, being a target rifle rather than a battle rifle. British troops disliked the small magazine and thought the P-14 unwieldy. And the P-14 used .303" anyway.

  2. Ian didnt mention it, but the Rifle No.4 was re-engineered to ease mass production. So there was not full interchangeability of parts with the SMLE (Rifle No.1). Enough to merit a new designation. And there was already a Rifle No.2 and a Rifle No.3 in service. Rifle No.4 was just the next in the sequence.

  3. It's not overly complicated. And less confusing than contemporary American systems. Where M1 can refer to a rifle, a carbine, a sub-machine gun or a helmet, M3 a carbine or two different tanks, and P38 a fighter plane and a can-opener.
