Tsarist Russia adopted the Madsen LMG for use by cavalry rather than infantry. As in several countries, the reason to adopt a LMG was to not encumber the cavalry with pack animals. However during WW1 the Madsen was supplanted by the Tachanka; a light cart with a Maxim gun in the back. With a team of four horses a Tachanka could manouveur with the cavalry and bring the Maxim gun, with several hundred rounds and cooling water, into and out of action more quickly than a LMG could be. A Tachanka could even deliver suppressive or deterent fire while moving.
