"The British liked buying guns they design themselves" Well apart from the SNYDER-Enfield, MARTINI-Henry, GATLING, GARDNER, NORDENFELT, and MAXIM guns, the LEE-Metford, LEE-Enfield, HOTCHKISS Portative, and the LEWIS gun.

It's easier for the assistant gunner to change the magazine, without disturbing the gunners hold on the LMG. It also means that magazine capacity is not restricted by ground clearance. Or, alternatively, that the gunner does not have to expose themselves as much when firing prone.

@luanfonseca5179 They didn't need to capture an MP 28. It was available commercially, and tested by the British Army before the War. The MP28 was their third favourite SMG, after the Suomi KP/-31 and Erma EMP. But it was the easiest to copy.

@luanfonseca5179 The Sten was designed before the Afrika Korps was fielded. And it was the Lanchester that was copied from the MP28.

@MrQ454 The Lanchester was developed before the Ethiopian campaign. MP28s were commercially available before the War and it was the British Army's third choice of SMG after the Suomi and the Erma EMP. And simpler to copy than either.

@railroading5726 Technically he was from Scotland. But he was a naturalised septic when he developed his turn bolt action and magazine. The first British trials rifles were imported Lee-Remingtons, in .45-70.

@luanfonseca5179 The Sten Gun was designed early 1940. A year before the Germans deployed to North Africa.

The Sten Gun was designed before there was any fighting in North Africa. And the Italian SMG was the MAB 38.

@luanfonseca5179 No it wasn't. The Sten was derived from the MP 28 via the Lanchester. But the design was developed before the British fought in Africa.

@MrQ454 The Lanchester was ordered before the British fought in Ethiopia.
