  1. The MAS 36 is mocked because of it's late adoption as a brand-new bolt action, at that late a date. Not understanding that it was meant to be a second-line weapon. While the French infantry would have semi-automatic rifles (MAS 40). Also the MAS 36 does not have a safety catch. As the French Army retained the 19th Century doctrine that bolt rifles should be carried with an an empty chamber. Until combat was imminent.
