  1. In the 1880s Austria Hungary imposed minimum barrel length for inported handguns. Many European gun makers made long barreled versions of their pocket revolvers. With the foresight halfway along the barrel, so the extra length could be cut off after purchase. Similarly, when semiautomatics appeared, they were made with barrels that protruded beyond the slide. Which could be exchanged for an aftermarket barrel of standard length.
