Without the fancy doodads the US Army stuck onto the M1909, the Hotchkiss Portative wasn't that bad a design: Complex and expensive, but reliable. It was the principal machine gun used in WW1 Allied tanks.

It may have been established by an American, but the Société Anonyme des Anciens Etablissements Hotchkiss et Compagnie was never an American company. It was capitalised in France and its factories were located, with one exception, were located there. And that one exception was in the UK; set up to make Hotckiss Portative machine guns for use in British tanks.
