Lovely place, inside and out! I wonder how stripped it is though? Hopefully they kept some of the ornate features and rooms and mainly only changed kitchen, bathrooms,, took out servant rooms etc. Wishful thinking on my part !
4
Nice one Nelson Rockefeller for donating the house and lands! Nicely done with the history information Ken!
4
Mortemar was beautiful especially from the outdoor views! Some great rooms too! I assume most of the houses besides this one are still standing!
4
Each residence was beautiful! Hard to choose one, especially because I have always liked Art Deco!
4
Amazing in this day and age that a house so historical and beautiful could be allowed to be demolished! Who got paid off? The usual bs that its all about money! So pathetic and sad! I was going to comment how I would love to visit it, and it looked like 20's mansion that had been bought and added too by Liberace!
4
I think my favourite part was Mary Pickford running down those monumental stairs at the front entrance!
4
Both houses where beautiful ! Amazes me how they built and lived in the Algerian Court, but got tired of it lol and built another that was so different!
3
Probably elements from different houses to get what he needed for the story!
3
Ken, I wonder if any of the reassembled rooms where removed and saved or used elsewhere. I know I saw some at the MOMA in NYC. Most had been removed from big mansions.
3
What a place! The ornamentation and detail are amazing ! Does Seaview Terrace still exist with the interiors of Aladdin's palace?
3
Maybe dark wood paneling and a coffered ceiling with a big ornate stone or marble fireplace! So tragic the place is gone, so we will never know!
3
Beautiful place inside and out! You opened the door on unusual names! My friends aunt was 'Pussy Maggot" ! Last name was pronounced like 'Ma joe ' But you can see the issue hahaha!
3
So many great rooms in this house! The use of big plants really makes some of the spaces too!
3
Another house with amazing hand crafted rooms! So much artistry going into building those palaces and then its all lost! Thanks TH !
3
The Drawing Room, with its Red Silk Damask covered walls ! And of course the Library!
3
It's kind of a given, that you can have a modern kitchen and a bathroom,in a historic house! Just keep it so it fits in and matches the rest of the house!
3
Nice to see you do a house from Canada Ken! Some beautiful rooms and a grande facade ! Maybe you could check into Casa Loma in Toronto. Scottish castle brought over stone by stone and rebuilt! The original owner ran out of money before it was completed!
3
The house was nice enough, but nothing really stood out to me! It's too bad the family fought over the will, even after she gave them so much!
3
OMG that Georgia house, there was a fire, but the grounds and the part of the house untouched, you could restore this place to be a real classic home again! Prob cost a Million though lol
3
Magnificent ! The statues and details, wow! There is another french Chateau' currently being restored, Château de Purnon. They have a channel, and the transformation is amazing to watch! Ken you would enjoy it and they have recreated some amazing wall paper from the 1780's from examples found in the chateau' !
3
I found that it was a bit like a hotel, more so than a house! It has the same 3 or 4 common factors with other big houses, the owner only gets to enjoy it for a few years, or no years like this one, the wife lives in it for a bit until they can't afford it, they sell it to a contractor who rips it down to build apartments or houses. Often the 1929 stock market crash can add to that!
3
Great tour! Amazing house with so much history!
3
What a stunning beautiful, yet comfortable house! Inside and out one of my favourite ones yet!
3
I thought that was very cool too! But in the updated photo, the pipes have been removed above the fireplace, so I assume the whole organ is gone. At least the fireplace is intact!
3
Beautiful house and property! I did not find much inside appealing though!
2
Thanks Ken! Having lived in Toronto and visited Casa Loma, I knew you would do it justice with a great video!
2
The townhouse of Harris F. Jr was my favourite!
2
It makes you wonder, when the wealthy where travelling through Europe and the Middle East, buying up furniture and objects, how did they get them shipped home safe and secure? Your in the Casbah and buy rugs and hookahs, but now you have to trust the seller to ship them...or somehow figure out if a ship was available etc!
2
It is a hodge podge of architecture on the outside! As a country home, maybe not as ornate as a city home! The gothic ballroom with the amazing castle fireplace and stained glass was nice!
2
Magnificent! Especially with 16 acres of manicured gardens!
2
Incredible story! He sounds like a power hungry charlatan! Amazing how a religion can still exist today, based on made up ideology from someone else!
2
This is the first time I have heard the real story Ken! Is the house still spewing the fictional story? Seriously if not, the true story should be made mandatory to tell at the house!
2
At least there are photos of them!
2
Gorgeous! Everything about it!
2
Ken, if I win the lottery this weekend we are going on a road trip to this incredible house! I can see how his interior design knowledge influenced the Dupont house interiors!
2
What a place! And it had some of the murdered Stanford White's furniture! It survived until the 70's! It should still be here now!
2
What a bunch of bs that was! The house had been totally restored after Mary died and was in great shape! There should have a grade listing put on it so it couldn't be altered. But you know how Hollywood is, they don't really care about the past!
2
stunning architectural and interior details! Nice to see it open as a museum, but really a wedding venue is ok too, to keep it going!
2
Great history in that house! Amazing they have preserved it! I know in downtown Toronto, they moved the William Campbell house across a road to build a new subway.
2
Wow he was larger than life it seems! Some great places that didn't take a lot to maintain, like many of the huge houses built for the other rich ones! The La Colina Solana house appeals to me for the big windows and rounded architecture features! But really all his places are nice...and I love that they are all still existing!
2
Yes! Thankfully we have photo's and Ken!
2
I wonder what the interior looks like now, and how much of the original exists!
2
I Wonder how much of the original interior is still intact!
1
Beautiful Palace, but with a dark history! Being forced into statehood and now I have heard the islands are getting too expensive for the native people to live ! I guess it must be great to go there on vacation, and have your Denny's and Mcdonalds and screw the native culture!
1
The Potter Palmer mansion look beautiful and incredible!
1
So was there a big auction of all the items and art work? The marble and the woodwork alone was spectacular, I wonder if it was saved too, Hopefully the rooms from the Chateau's ! Maybe the MOMA has them I remember seeing some, that had been taken from some NYC mansions.
1
The lovers description, wouldn't boyfriend or partner be a bit more appropriate! Just my opinion. Thanks for your notes!
1
I read that the estate being so huge, that originally it took 20 minutes to drive from the Gate house to the castle!
1
I would be into watching that, but I think it could have its own channel. I like how this channel features magnificent houses from a specific period!
1
What a gorgeous house! Thankfully another one that still stands and you can still visit!
