Ivan Illich (exactly 50 years ago) in “Medical Nemesis” classified this error as “iatrogenic”. These systematic errors, compounded by the system of insurance, have enfeebled western societies. What China is doing is truly revealing the future in medical treatment in civilized societies. Of course, blocking improvements will be the goal of western governments following their own agendas.

  37. America should concentrate on “building back better” — everything should be made in America. From drugs to laptops to tennis shoes to toothpicks. The US must be self-sufficient in most things (ok to import bananas from Philippines however). I realize things will cost more but that doesn’t bother me. I get dividend checks each month of $7.25 MM. I drive a Porsche Macan. Most of my neighbors are in the same boat — speaking of which, I’m still short of funds for a new Learjet. A real downer if I have to settle for a used plane😢

Western investors will continue to play with themselves, buying and selling in an ongoing ponzi scheme (read today’s FT “DeepSeek shock will not derail”). The US equity market already constitutes some 75% of all global public equity markets. With the spread of Chinese-led technology and manufacturing in the rest of the world, this financial trading between insiders appears to be able to go on forever. The end to this incestuous cycle can only come in one of two forms. As the west manufactures little, BRICS must be prepared to raise real prices on goods it exports to the west. How this is done is a work-in-progress (likely multiple mechanisms). The endpoint here is clearly the instability, and ongoing weakening, of the USD as a reserve currency. This is a fundamental restructuring that Zoltan Pozsar termed “Bretton Woods III”. The other choice is war, which has very serious advocates among the US élites who cannot link advanced weaponry to advanced technology. To paraphrase Ogden Nash, “candy is dandy but the liquor of military defeat is quicker”.

A recession is defined by the government — and they have already played fast and loose with the definition to suit their goals. A “recession” is “over there”. What matters for the ordinary person is prices. Watch what happens to prices in relation to income. The clearest sign of what the government plans is to look at what’s done to retirees (on fixed incomes). CPI-U increased 3.4% in 2023. Social Security payments increased 2.3%. For next year, if the government says there will be no increase in SSI (+0.0%) what can the common do? In a western “democracy”, the public has no recourse because there is no choice in candidates as they are controlled by financial interests.

Government serves the moneyed elites — who else has the extra cash lying around to buy the politicians? Hmm…will my $20 elect the person I want? Would it make a difference if I had $200,000 to spend?
