As the volume increases, there are more viruses reproducing and therefore more opportunity for mutations to develop. It has absolutely nothing to do with vaccinations.

  9. I’m assuming the false negative was a result from the rapid test. Did those with symptoms also take the test that doesn’t have quick results at the time of the rapid test, or did they get the rapid test both times. If my assumption is incorrect or if you don’t know, let me know. I’m sheltering in place in Mexico, not at all eager to risk either the travel or returning to Los Angeles, one of the worst hotspots in the country. Hotels are offering the rapid test to tourists returning to the states (and a company selling fake negative results has been uncovered) so I’m worried about this testing when I do think it’s safe to return.

If it was an effective therapeutic, what is the mechanism? The largest manufacturer and distributor of ivermectin is Merck. If ivermectin had any efficacy, Merck would stand to make billions of dollars. Merck just conducted the largest study so far on ivermectin. The study shows ivermectin has no efficacy in treating the virus. Merck’s own antivirus candidate failed miserably, and Merck is searching for other candidates from smaller bio-medical companies to acquire—a big financial risk to take if they were sitting on a goldmine. Oh, and the Merck study also shows that high dosages of ivermectin are unsafe. There is a therapeutic threshold in its treatment of parasites that shouldn’t be exceeded. So, no scientific mechanism for how ivermectin might work as an antiviral. The company that stands to gain the most is reporting that their medication has no efficacy as an antiviral after conducting a comprehensive study (and is dangerous at higher levels). It seems clear that ivermectin has no medical role to play as a therapeutic or a prophylactic. Yet antivaxxers continue to push it as an alternative to vaccines, while stirring up fear, uncertainty, and doubt about vaccines. Do you realize that continuation of your disinformation posts is harmful to the health of others, that you might be contributing to the unnecessary deaths of others?. I urge you in the name of decency to stop.

In any event, domestic trolls organize, use the same techniques, and many have similar goals. White supremacists want to stir up vaccine distrust in communities of color. Certain radical environmentalists want to decimate human population. The extreme right (fascist) wants to discredit the government and destabilize the U.S. so they can have another opportunity to overthrow the country. And some, I’m sure, are just frightened children unable to face their fears, clinging to conspiracy theories that give them an ego boost and feel more in control, somehow. Many of these have been retreating from reality and into make-believe for years.

  17. Reducing meat (mostly pork and beef) consumption to one or two meals a week would have a wide and deep positive impact. There are a wide variety of alternative protein sources. I’m not placing a lot of hope on vat grown beef because I don’t think it can compete economically with industrial scale beef and pork exploitation. The problem is a cultural one. Don’t get me wrong. I love an occasional ribeye, t-bone, or sirloin. I love good burgers and I can’t imagine a life without tacos. But I can and have been limiting my meat consumption to two or three days a week, some weeks only one or two meals. I don’t think this is extreme, nor is it too much to ask others to do likewise. Give it a try. Work your way down by eliminating meat consumption by one day a week for a while, and then another.

My impression was that ER staff have seen the bloody and often fatal results of motorcycle accidents to the point where they’d give up motorcycle riding. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a rider. I ride very defensively, but I’ve also done some stupid shit. I’ve also seen the results of people doing stupid shit and running out of margin (mountain roads).

  26. You’re maybe referring to ivermectin? Apparently there is anecdotal evidence and a few “light” studies trying to collect data from a string of anecdotes, but no major studies. I think the main reason it’s not being studied is that proponents can’t really explain by what mechanism is it supposed to work. Scientists are not going to waste time on something they think is a dead end, when there isn’t a scientific and medical reason why it should work. I think it’s a desperation measure. It’s been employed on an emergency basis in countries getting hit really hard that don’t have a lot of options. Despite what the proponents say (mostly antivaxxers, do give you an idea of their respect for science) the data coming out of Brazil is sketchy. We have vaccines, and soon they will be available to more people. Horse dewormer might be a “viable” option for antivaxxers, but so is small, non-fatal doses of arsenic, taken 3x a day. That’s a joke, btw. Don’t take arsenic.

  28. John is taking 4000 IU/day, last I heard. I’ve been taking 2,000 and I’m thinking about increasing the dosage. However, I live in a much more southern clime. John has suggested that before you go past 4,000 IU, ask your doctor about it. So definitely it’s not too much. It might be too little, but it’s in the right ball park. Follow your practitioner’s advice, but ask him if increasing the dose another 1 or 2 thousand IU would be safe.

It’s just fucked, but that’s how it is until/unless the more close fitting masks with replaceable filters come down in price. In the work I used to do, the fogging would be a real issue and it would be worth it to buy one of those more elaborate and expensive masks.

  31. I’ve tried both kn95 as the outside layer and the surgical mask as outside layer. Surgical mask over kn 95 works better. I’m also using anti fog lens cleaning wipes, which helps a bit. Yes, there’s still fog, but it dissipates more quickly.

  37. Have you tried mouthwash? 😄 It should make mask wearing less unbearable! The worst part is my glasses fog up. Once or twice my mask got overly moist from the afternoon humidity. This is why I carry spare masks. As I was typing this, I received a package. It contained urethane frame inserts that go inside the surgical mask. They seem to provide a better seal while also providing a little more breathing space around the nose and mouth. (There were also various doodads for better securing the mask elastic behind my head.)

It works as a neurotoxin, attacking the nervous systems of certain types of intestinal worms and lice. If one has such an infestation, it could be considered a comorbidity. Treatment for those with these intestinal parasites is no more than once every six months. People experimenting with high dosages on a daily basis are acting foolishly, on the order of ingesting bleach. Perhaps they should ingest a good drain cleaner instead, and not stress hospital capacity.

If anything, the U.S. has been actively hindering the Mexican pandemic response by sending tourists, but México’s government has been complicit in that because it needs tourism dollars. Those people willing to travel to Covid hotspots for a vacation are not the types to follow health and safety protocols. Every time I go out, over half the gringos are maskless. This new evidence wrt to ivermectin’s mechanisms suggest it inhibits the various mechanisms of the virus, from its ability to latch onto cells, enter the cell nucleus, and reproduce. I was a big skeptic, but this information from actual experts is removing doubt. I’m still going to get vaccinated, however! If these theoretical mechanisms are backed by the evidence (as seems to be the case), the anti-viral classification applies. Even better if it proves to be a broad spectrum anti-viral.
