  5. The invasion has been a set back for China. Before the invasion, China had much more diplomatic maneuvering room among EU and NATO members, but now it faces a untied front thanks to Russia. Offering Russia aid will derail or slow down China’s other projects. I believe Putin withheld information from Xi with regard to the extent of the invasion, and this also has the Chinese angry and mistrustful.

  9. I think he recently read a biography of Mussolini. But seriously, I heard that his top general resigned and Lukanhesko faces a mutiny if he tries to send troops. They just won’t obey an order to go fight for Putin. I don’t know if this is just a rumor or if it’s been confirmed by independent sources.

  10. This young soldier has demonstrated that they have a way out: surrender. I think the West could do more to encourage Russian soldiers to surrender, like offer asylum and resettlement.

  11. These untrained conscripts are being sent out to be slaughtered so that the more experienced soldiers can find the Ukrainian positions. It’s a cruel tactic, and I don’t know how the generals could tell them the truth about this without facing mutiny. “We are sending you to certain death for the glory of Putin” doesn’t sound like a morale improver.

Given the shoddy condition of Russia’s armed forces, how many Russian ICBMs do you think are operational? Don’t rely on your assumptions about the West’s response to the use of tactical nukes. Your assumptions might be faulty.

  18. The Kremlin uses the economically poor Central Asia republics as cannon fodder farms by keeping them poor. As the men of the ‘stans die in Ukraine, Putin will send in more ethnic Russians to replace them in their own countries in order to colonize them. Economic development and exploitation of resources will be for Russia and Russian colonists, not for those native to the Central Asia ‘stans.

  19. Let’s hope that the Belarusian President continues to accept his bribes NOT to enter the war. In a system that corrupt, it’s not difficult to offer him millions of dollars to hold back his military. It’s quite cost effective. Russia isn’t really in a position to make counter offers.

  20. Pray for them a little less. I don’t hate Russia or the Russians, but I am horrified by them. They have enabled this and except for a small amount of Russians openly protesting, they continue to enable this. Maybe when enough of their children come back in body bags or as cripples, they will be horrified, too. Maybe pray for that, that Russian citizens discover the horror of war and come back from the brink.

  39. You’re saying that the jamming could trigger a programmed response from the drone to return to base or to a rally point away from the jammer gun. Fair enough. But while the drone is returning to base or flying out of jamming range, it’s not performing its task. So these jammer guns are effectively screening the Russian’s reconn. They are denying vital information about troop positions and movements to the Russians. As far as triangulating the jammer gun, that would require adding more hardware to detect direction, and Russia does not have access to that hardware because of sanctions. Remember that the hardware has to be miniaturized and use modern CPUs. Russia doesn’t have the capability to manufacture any of the miniaturized components and it can’t buy them. Their “high tech” manufacturing is early 1990s level at best, and I question whether they even have the capacity to build 90nm chips at scale. (Meanwhile Taiwan and South Korea can mass produce CPUs at 5nm-3nm.) Russia won’t run out of bullets or artillery shells, but they are already facing shortages of guided missiles, cruise missiles, precision guided bombs, and whatnot. They cannot easily replace MANPADS or ATGM systems.

  44. Liquidate implies (to me) that Russian officers were being murdered in the basement of the Lubyanka by the FSB. If they’re just being killed on the battlefield, it’s fine to just say it that way. If the numbers are very high, you might say they are being slaughtered like pigs.

Russian propaganda cannot be confirmed at all because Russia has banned an independent press—all news in Russia is controlled by the state. There is at least the possibility that this soldier’s story can be checked. Furthermore, Ukrainian Defense has also issued corrections of stories that lessened their propaganda value. Two prominent examples of this are the stories about the “ghost of Kyiv” pilot and the defiant soldiers on Snake Island who didn’t die, but survived.
