He was wearing a jacket from a snowboard company, not because it was cheap, not because it was anti-fashionable, but because the snowboard company is in Vermont, and he supports businesses in his state. I do not doubt he bought it with his own money, because I just don’t see him accepting a gift, even a jacket, from a business. I’m not sure where he got the mittens. Tell us if you know!

  9. He has a captive major network and two minor ones that he could continue to use that won’t ask questions, not to mention countless radio talk shows. But he doesn’t get the instant feedback of his followers to pump him up on broadcast media. And here is the crux. This isn’t about free expression, this is about Trump and his followers reinforcing each other, mutually supporting what is worst in all of them. The link is broken, Trump can no longer experience the online adulation of his fanatics, nor do they get their Trump fix. This was never about expression, it was about a feedback loop. I dunno, but maybe he really will fade away without Twitter. Maybe portions of his base will wake up or otherwise find their way out of the fog of their delusions. I wouldn’t count on it, but who knows?

  13. I quit in 2006. My first presidential election I voted for Reagan. The insanity and divisiveness can be tied to Newt Gingrich in 1994, but the cynicism and racism goes back to the Southern Strategy. Gingrich was the Speaker of the House that made partisanship into tribal war—and its this same tribalism that has brainwashed the majority of Republicans to give up the principles of democracy to “own the libs”.

I’ll stick with the simpler explanation until and unless there’s actual evidence of blackmail. I’m just sick of the Trumper Q anon conspiracy bullshit, so I apologize for not having much patience for left wing conspiracy theories either.

  38. Trumps most fervent supporters don’t understand how deep and pervasive the conspiracy goes. It’s not just a deep state, it’s a wiiiide state. The one Fox News panelist almost got there, pointing out “local level shenanigans”, but I have PROOF that there was a conspiracy among registered voters to show up at the polls or mail in their ballots and vote Trump out. This conspiracy is slick. They were able to vote against Trump cynically using the election laws of their own state to have their votes for Biden counted DESPITE THE FACT that they didn’t vote for President Trump. And although I haven’t (yet) been able to trace SOROS money payoffs to these voters, I do have proof that these non-Trump voters were organized and influenced by a secret cabal referred to in some espionage circles as “The Biden Campaign”. They also go by the cryptic moniker “Biden/Harris2020”. These are the evil geniuses that are behind this fraudulent election, where fraudulent is defined as “not for Trump”. Look at these lawn signs that I stole off my neighbor’s lawn! Is that not enough proof? These Biden voters were communicating with each other via lawn signs, despite the fake pandemic hoax that was caused by the Chinese but cured by Trump in case its real but it’s not definitely not and it’s not that serious, less than 1% die so don’t wear a mask. Because freedom. Sorry, I got a little off track. To sum up: a shadowy group known as “the voters” and sometimes “the American People” colluded to use their right to vote to deprive Trump of his job, despite Trump doing EVERYTHING RIGHT, including (and mostly) being born very very wealthy. This group of “voters” was urged to go to the polls or mail in their ballots by an shadowy and evil group known as “The Biden Campaign”. I have the lawn signs to prove it!

  41. The state charges, if successful, will do that. We shouldn’t expect him to get prosecuted for inciting the riot. It’s not impossible, but the standard for guilt is higher in Federal Court than in the court of opinion. We all know what he did, but prosecutors need a true slam dunk. (More investigation is necessary.)

We finally got a driver that’s not going to steer the car off a cliff! And maybe now that we have a sane driver, we can improve the engine so it doesn’t overheat, and so it can pull more people. Maybe get the tail pipe fixed so we don’t choke on the exhaust (or, scary thought, get an electric motor). I think of capitalism as a technology stack, like a set of programs that work together. In a democracy, we decide to what use we want to put that technology. It doesn’t have to be to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

  43. The GOP response is nauseating. When Bush invaded Iraq, most Democrats got behind him before that conflict had dragged on for years. This is in line with bipartisan support for foreign policy during crisis and presenting a united front against adversaries. For good or ill, this is how we’ve pulled together as a country for the good of the country throughout our history. I quit the GOP years ago, and every day I am glad I made that decision. The current GOP is anti-American and their policies are non-conservative.

Which is more absurd? 1) I swear on this peace of paper to uphold and protect the piece of paper, or 2) I swear on this sheaf of papers, bound up together, to uphold and protect a different piece of paper. It’s a solemn ritual, and that’s OK. Solemn rituals are important, especially for momentous public moments. The object sworn upon should be something important and holy to the oath taker. Does it matter to you and me, as galactic anthropologists, what the specific object is?
