  36. If you aren’t already familiar with the concept, look up “Overton Window”. I would definitely call Manchin a conservative Democrat. He comes from a conservative state. If you want to maintain or grow a majority in Congress, you have to make allowances. This situation hasn’t changed for decades (and if you really want to change it, you need to make changes in the state legislatures). Until it changes, you might have better luck attracting more conservatives to the Democratic Party, assuming you want your programs passed at all. Real conservatives that haven’t thrown out their principles in favor of a fascist cult of personality, have lost their home in the GOP. A few are trying to fight eviction. If they see that there is room for conservatives in the Democratic Party (which has rightfully claimed to be a big tent coalition), they might be tempted to switch. It will be interesting if a few Republican senators break party discipline and vote for the reconciliation bill. I’m not holding my breath, but if they do, it will be because Manchin got his compromise.

  37.  @stevenclark1662  I don’t disagree with your basic premise, but I’d like to point out that the Democratic Party has rightfully claimed to be a big tent coalition, and contains a wise spectrum of factions. Those factions wax and wane in power in proportion to how good they are at bringing in the votes. If you want a stronger progressive faction pushing a more progressive agenda, go organize. Learn from Stacy Abrams and AOC.
