It’s “bank” has loaned a total of $15 billion. It can’t agree on a reserve currency nor can it create one, because none of the members can trust any of the others. BRICS as an organization is an impotent political symbol.

The Belarusian Army can barely keep a lid on the democratic opposition. The last time there was an uprising (2020), Lukashenko had to ask Putin for help. Russia doesn’t even have enough troops to maintain order in Russia. He can’t loan any to Lukashenko. Securing Lukashenko’s power is Prigozhin and Wagner’s new contract. The idea that Russia can attack again through Belarus presupposes that Russia has enough troops. There is no evidence that Russia has that kind of man power capable of carrying out a fresh assault on Kyiv.

There is plenty of that on other programs. Some of it is good quality, some of it is bad. The focus of this program is bigger picture and is more about “national attitudes”. I’m sure these journalists are getting briefed by military experts, but they don’t want to get too far into the details. They seem to be asking more questions than offering answers. This is frustrating, but that’s where we are. The future is unwritten.

Look at his work with the Lincoln Project, which has been targeting conservatives over the past year, conservatives uneasy and becoming disillusioned with the GOP, especially Trump. The Lincoln Projects, and other anti Trump conservative groups should be credited with peeling off a percentage of Republican voters from Trump (not to mention the Republican incumbents in the Georgia runoffs). This percentage is not insignificant in tight races. It’s valid to have reservations about Rick Wilson because of his history as a GOP campaign operative. But please also recognize what he’s been doing for the past four years, as an individual and with the Lincoln Project.

You are probably confused from a lack of interest in history, current events, or both. Russia failed to conquer Ukraine in its first offensive. The Russian army was forced to retreat from the area near Kyiv. Now they are trying again.

I wouldn’t say it was good for Ukraine, but at the very least there is a silver lining, and for sure this is a defining moment for the people of Ukraine. It is a mistake to say any war is good—war is a failure of politics and diplomacy between two or more countries. Civil war is even worse. But such wars can be defining moments in the life of a country. They can redefine regions and even the world order. The chaos of war often leads to unintended consequences and unexpected results. Putin intended that this war create a new order in Europe, and he is getting his wish—just not in the way he intended. The naked aggression and criminality of his regime have had the opposite effect, galvanizing the NATO countries instead of disorganizing them, and motivating other countries to join NATO where previously they wished to remain neutral and friendly to Russia. Putin has increased European cooperation instead of dividing it. In hindsight, these seem to be good results. But the actions that led to the results have killed thousands of innocents and caused billions of dollars in damage. There will be other unwanted consequences to the world outside of Europe, such as starvation and economic downturn. People far away from the conflict will suffer.

There are conservatives that appear or identify as “moderate conservatives” because the GOP has gone so deep into extreme right wing fascist John Birch cloud cuckoo land. You are right to recognize them as conservatives, but I also hope you recognize they have more in common with liberals than they do the fascists that own the current GOP (and I mean literally own it, despite a handful of dissident Republican office holders). The bedrock of American conservatism is the same as that of American liberals and progressives: Constitutional Democracy. Call conservatives whatever your want, but understand that many of them are with you in the fight for our country.

Do not hope for quick victory over Russia, rather hope for certain and complete victory over Russia. It will take as long as it needs to take. I have faith that the Ukrainians will hold up. I do not have faith that Putin is a rational actor.

It would backfire if it were implemented, but it won’t be. This is an extreme fringe addressing real problems with extremist solutions. The actual dividing lines on the issues is whether one thinks they exist or not, or whether they’re important enough to be solved. If you acknowledge that they exist and need to be addressed, you can debate which are the best solutions and you can discard harebrained schemes like segregated med schools.

Agreed. I don’t want to “both sides” the extremes. Clearly one extreme has gained control of the GOP. But embracing the other extreme isn’t the solution. Both extremes lead to dictatorship. Maybe we should stop thinking of our politics as divided between two poles with us in the center, pulled in either direction. We should thing of ourselves as the center of power. We haven’t yet lost the tools that give us centrists our power—our constitutional government, our democratic institutions, the rule of law. They are being eroded, but we can still use them to halt the authoritarians (of both sides).

You might be right. But here’s why I think you’re wrong. 😉 The Democratic Party is already a coalition of factions (which is why there’s always, ALWAYS been so much infighting). If the “green-progressive” faction can deliver more votes in upcoming elections, they’ll have correspondingly more power. If they can cooperate and form alliances with other factions, they’ll share in more power within the party. You might think of the Democratic Party as a quasi parliamentarian system in this way. The “third” parties in the U.S. have been mostly inconsequential. If you consider yourself something along the lines of a green progressive, you might consider joining the Democratic Party and supporting the green-progressive faction within it. Just a thought!
