  1. If you understood American politics it would. Him on his own wouldn't be enough to sink the campaign anymore than Abigail Disney pulling all of her money from all of the Democrats if Biden doesn't bow out of the race. Those are just two major donors to the party and you better believe they're not saying things that are going to get them kicked out of their circle of friends. They're the ones that are normally doing things like organizing fundraisers, the big money fundraisers that the parties need to pay for the expense of competing.

  3. Competition. If the competitors aren't doing that, the customer just sees the price and doesn't mentally factor in the fact that there's no additional tipping required. It's the same reason why most stores don't include sales tax with the price. They could do it rather easily, but it makes their prices look higher than the competitors even if the final price is the same. Also, the tips are helpful when it comes to attracting the best available servers as expecting customers to tip often means more tips than if the money is just added to the bill.

  4. Or, try something radical, actually do something to earn the votes of younger men. I don't see much of anything on her campaign positions that addresses the needs of younger men. But, somehow it's going to be men that are blamed if she loses, even though it's going to be women that get credit if she wins.

What does it say about the Democrats that voting for somebody that's pretty much promising to make it burn is more appealing than their candidate?

  11.  @timf7679  From the customers, all this is just BS nonsense that focuses around tricking the customers into paying more than they would otherwise. Same goes for the service fees, there's no reason for those either, the businesses could just bake that into the price the way that they used to, but for some reason it's become normal to make some service fees and sales tax an add on rather than being included in the price. Plus, it gives a bunch of power to the customers.

  12.  @mavicmaverick-pnw  Yes, accountants exist and can figure out how much of the price to apportion to labor versus rent versus food and whatever other components are at play. The reason for tipping is that the business can put that on the customers without having to actually list an accurate price on their menu.Around here between tax and tip the difference can be 30% if you do the now largely standard 20% versus the older standard of 15%.

Considering how much DV is the result of anger management issues, perhaps addressing some of the things that lead men to be angry and frustrated could be a portion of the plan to deal with the problem.

  17.  @BrooksFoodLooks  Early on it made sense to elect the President indirectly because of how large the country was and the time it took news to spread about what platforms the candidates were running on. The electors could go to DC and do some debating and choose the candidate that best reflected them. However, at this point, the system makes absolutely no sense in anyway and an increasing portion of the elections are going to the one that can figure out how to use advanced statistical tools to just get the necessary votes in specific states to win the election. I don't think that if those tools had existed when the constitution was being written that they would have gone with this method.

  18. They had their chance to save in a way that the younger people haven't, and I don't see anybody coming to save my social security. They've already increased the eligibility age for me, even though I'm in my 40s and none of the politicians I've had available to vote for have been willing to actually do something to address it. Meanwhile, wages have largely be stagnant for my entire life allow for fewer options in terms of savings, and housing prices have continued to go up as insufficient new housing stock has come onto the market to allow us to buy in.

People rarely talk about the ethnic cleansing that went in over the history of the US when it comes to white ethnic groups. A lot of people genuinely don't know that German-Americans and Italian-Americans were also thrown into concentration camps on US soil during WWII because it gets left out. A lot of people are not aware that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meyer_v._Nebraska came about because anti-German sentiment during WWI and as a result other groups have gotten to benefit from it being settled precedent that you can't ban languages from schools. The whole reality of that looks very different when you consider the whole context of what happened rather than cherry picking. While the popular conception is that lynching was white on black crime, the reality is that a solid third of those lynched weren't black. It was still horrific, but there's no reason to pretend like those other victims didn't exist.

  21. @blaze129 Yes, although it's not surprising given the degree to which much of the genocide and ethnic cleansing that was done wasn't ever acknowledged in schools. It's hard to stop things like that from repeating if you can't admit that groups like Germans were ethnically cleansed and one of the important civil rights court cases involved the German language being banned from schools. People grow up with this questionable narrative that it was white people versus everybody else and the reality was a lot worse than that. What constitutes white changed a lot over the centuries and there were definitely instances like with Black people and the Irish where the Irish were the less desirables and there were real questions about whether a Catholic was an acceptable choice for POTUS before JFK was elected.

If he was getting a bunch of small money donations from voters he might be able to survive that, but the voters never wanted him. There were just enough that didn't want Trump for him to win.

  31. It's slightly more complicated as parts of Eastern Europe have even more weapons than the US does, but the easy access of weapons is a significant factor, as is other social factors in the US. Limiting the weapons available to ones that have legitimate civilian use would make it a lot harder to massacre large numbers of people though. There's little point in being able to load up more than 5 or 6 rounds for civilian use.

  32.  @williamyelton2227  If a group is genuinely at a disadvantage structurally, they will disproportionately benefit from measures to address things like poverty or access to healthcare. But, it would happen in a way that didn't leave people in as much need out of the help.

Focus on the universal programs and if there's still issues that don't go away as a byproduct, that is the time to consider something more along the lines of a DEI initiative. In practice, there's little reason to believe that that would be necessary as the main differences are at the most wealthy within the groups and far less so at lower levels of wealth.

  34.  @Stunkos  Yes, one of the things that I've pointed out for decades now is that if universal programs don't completely solve the issues, further programs will not permit any hiding spots for bigots to hide their bigotry if there is more targeting. Part of why racists can get away with stuff like the welfare queens speech and the like, is because it isn't universal and there are a bunch of extremely poor white people that nobody seems to care about helping.

  35. Not really, but we do need 2 parties pushing for different priorities. The problem with the Democrats and the Republicans is that they're equivalent to the coalitions that you see in parliamentary systems where they have many parties However, since the Democrats keep moving further and further to the right, the GOP has gotten to be less and less diverse, it used to be that there was a genuine split in the GOP over illegal immigration with some being for more control and some for less. However, as the Democrats have moved further and further to the right, the positions that conservative politicians can take has greatly shrunken to the point where it's mostly just MAGA Republicans and not many others have been able to figure out how to remain relevant.

  36.  @Stunkos  Precisely. A big difference is that the Democrats and Republicans create their coalitions before joining a party. Whereas in many other areas the parties join coalitions. There isn't really that much difference and if the Democrats would go back to being a leftwing party, you'd see more variety in the GOP candidates on various issues.

  37. ​ @Porpentein  It has to do with how the system is set up, you can do things like have a proportional voting system where parties get a certain number of seats based on the portion of the votes they won. You can also do things like bar parties from choosing which candidates are on the ballot. Here in WA State, we have a bunch of parties at the state level because the parties are only allowed to choose the nominees for the Presidential election. So, every other partisan race the candidates get to put whatever party they like, we even get some folks on old or obscure parties like the Whigs running candidates. But, TBH, that hasn't really changed things so much as the fact that we permit individuals from the same party to run against each other in the general election and when districting is done, we don't permit the winners to gerrymander themselves to an advantage as it's a separate committee that does that.

  40. Exactly, neither Trump nor Harris made any serious effort to earn my vote, so I voted 3rd party for somebody that was saying things that I think might make my life and the life of others better. Of course, it'll be Harris or Trump, but that's not my fault.

  41. You'll note that the Harris campaign has been comparatively little effort into trying to earn men's votes. If you go to her site there's a fair number of mention of women and people of color, but I didn't see anything at all that would directly benefit me, even though a bunch of the stuff is suspiciously similar to the nonsense that has been hurting me in the past. It's not as obvious as it was in 2016 that they don't want the male vote, but it's pretty clear that they don't want men voting for them unless they're a very specific kind that has no self-esteem and is fine with being permanently locked out of any sort of access to higher education or a better life.

  46. TBH, the notes should go in the men's rooms as well to remind men that they don't have to vote for Harris just because the media says they have to. Harris hasn't done anything to try to earn men's votes, so men should realize that it's OK to vote Trump, or like I did 3rd party.

  47. Part of the problem is that Trump lies constantly and reverses himself, it's not at all clear which of the horrible things he's promising to do are shiny enough for him to follow through on. Harris, OTOH, has been in the race for less than 6 months and didn't even have a platform to offer the voters initially. She didn't compete in any of the primaries this time, and didn't win a single delegate last time. I'd be somewhat hard pressed myself to really say much about either candidate that I think might actually apply if they're elected. I'm somewhat fortunate in the sense that I live in a part of the country that doesn't get a meaningful vote. The state hasn't voted GOP since the '80s and none of the candidates put up much of a fight for our votes in the general election. From what I've seen from both candidates, they flat out don't want my vote.
