I have a long stick that I use as a stethoscope to find noisy alternators, power steering and other noisy components, usually due to bearings.

What a pleasure to work on such a clean engine!
2
You could use a high volume air exchanger in that garage. Some scary fumes going on.
2
Having watched you do so many of these jobs, I can put the phone down and do other things and drive, while just listening to your banter. I can visualize most of what you are doing and just enjoy listening to you. And that IS okay.😊
2
22:52 you remind me of my younger years on Maui. Whenever a big storm hit, we grabbed our military jeeps, chainsaws and machetes and hit the side roads looking to help.
2
You should get an award for best video and camera work in tight spaces and usually one handed.
2
Are these kinds of jobs a fixed price based on an estimate or are they based on hours? When I did radio and electronics repairs, most of the jobs were based on past experiences. Then if I got it done in less time, good for me. If it took longer the customer scored.

I've wondered what Ray's background was like. He would be a great teacher and must have had some really good instructors or mentors in his past.
2
I am pretty much sold on the battery impact wrenches you use. I bought corded ones for the power doing some axle work, but if the cordless are strong enough, it would be nice. My right angle 3/8" socket wrench is cordless and worth every penny so far.
2
Every time I watch your videos, it makes me want a lift in my garage. So many things I could inspect and repair if I could easily get under them. Jacking them up and putting them on stands is okay, but time consuming and not always conducive to making the job easier.
2
Was the valve covers done because you had to do so much to get the the timing belt and water pump? I may have missed it if they had a problem. I'm an advocate of doing anything that might be needed when taking on such an intensive job. Gaskets and seals are always just a moment away from leaking.
2
Yep. Had to drink my coffee without Ray's filming this morning. I survived.

Pulling the wiper cowl makes a big difference on my Kia.
2
Your bench looks like my old radio repair shop, just different tools. Finally in my elder years, I'm better at putting tools back in their place. It sure is nice to have a clean bench and tools where you expect. If I lived closer, I would volunteer my time putting things in their place.
2
Would anti-seize help in a sensor for removing later? Or would the heat just burn it off? They are not my favorite thing to remove.
2
I agree. And the fact that it allows them more to do together in common ground and interests, is going to really help their marriage. So many marriages, people spend most of the day apart and then have little more than kids and responsibilities in common.

All the camera angles are impressive, such as on the fence as the truck is pulling out, in the trailer as the door is opening. It takes a bit more time and thought, but really helps make the videos. I really would like to watch a video of Ray downloading and editing all the video into one production. That's the part I have a problem with and could use some edumaction on.

After the transmission came loose from the studs, we could see the front of the transmission rise up about an inch or so. I was thinking that maybe the up and down angle was what was holding it, besides any corrosion. Me thinks that the transmission stand could have been adjusted down in the front to relieve that pressure.
2
At least we are all with you. You're not alone.
2
Works for me. Sometimes I put off watching you to build up what's ready to watch for just the right time in my schedule.

The way it almost turns over off the trailer battery is how those mini jump boxes have worked for me.

Having a 2001 PT cruiser myself, I almost asked you yesterday if that PT was waiting to be worked on. Since buying one second hand, from the wife, whose husband passed three years earlier, I have become somewhat prolific with PT problems and repairs. From wheel bearing all the way into the timing belt. It also sat two years in my garage before I put more effort into it. It is full of bling and chrome, since it was a multi-year car show winner, here in Virginia. With a manual 5 speed and a somewhat noisy muffler, it's fun to drive if my 19 year old grandson doesn't run it into the ground.

People with heaters in Florida just have too much money. Lol😂
2
Looks like a good season for AC repairs.
2
Curious if you need a bunch of licenses or permits to use the tow truck with the business? Do you charge for that service too.

I had issues with the transaxle seals leaking and was thinking it would be good to replace the seal each time the cv axle is removed. Is this not a common practice? I guess if it good, let it go. The orice if the seals arent very much.
2
34:57 it looked like it is going to walk off again.

I spent my career troubleshooting electronics and can really appreciate your way of thinking this through. It's enough to scramble most brains. You are the exception my man.
2
Watching you and that Bobcat and at the same time I'm watching Yukon Gold and then running D6 and D10 dozers around in the mud. Fun living vicariously through you and then.

He's running low on brake cleaner and needs people to send him more.

I just finished out a complete swap of suspension and steering on my PT. Unfortunately, the new steeringing gear sprung a seal leak and I had to replace it again. It went to the alignment shop today Prior to sending it, I did various checks and got the alignment in the ball park, but using my inexpensive camber checking tool, I found the camber way out, further than it could be adjusted. I bout the camber adjustment bolts for it and sent them with the car to be aligned. It's a good thing that I did. They had to use it to get it aligned properly. Cost me a bit more in labor, since they installed them. I could have, but wasn't so sure I needed them. The camber bolts are built oblong and replace one of the strut bolts and because of their shape, they allow for the camber adjustment. Sure glad I knew this before it went in and part of all this is from watching various videos of Ray's in the first place.

I messed up a drive axle seal while installing the CV axle for my PT. Went to fill the transaxle and it was pouring out one of the two seals. I have new ones coming, no one has any locally. I want to remove everything, since the seal issue is the last thing remaining to get the PT front end replacement project back up and running. But the heat index is over 100 and so I will instead sit here and watch you work.

No fair timing yourself 6:22 if someone is getting the parts for you. 😊

I have to say you truly deserve an award of some sort for this job. I could see getting it apart and quitting, leaving it apart like the scarecrow in wizard of oz. I am totally amazed. Back in the day I used to install the old two-way radio systems in cars and truck. Giant boat anchor units in the trunk and big fat cables under and behind everything to the front dash area and control heads, speakers and mics. Then heavy power wires on to the battery. On occasion someone with a brand new car or assigned company car would see their car in pieces either in a parking lot or later when I had an install bay, strewn around the floor and they would freak out. I always managed to get it back together.

5:19 it would be nice if the exhaust leak was repaired first, but you address this as I write.
1
You will need a good vacation after this job is done, or at least some quiet time and a six pack.

I found some fluid leaked from the master when I left the lid on. I realized what it was, but later a puddle had found its way to the cement under the card and had me worried there was some sort of leak. After a good wipe down and moving it from that spot, I am glad to say it was just the spillage.

How the heck did insurance agree to make repairs in that Hyundai?

Add the proper way to compress those caliper pistons that require turning, to something I learned today.

In the words of the late Roseanna Danna, "Well it just goes to show you, it's always something! You either got a toenail in your hamburger or toilet paper clinging to your shoe."
1
Put a sock or cloth bag over the end to catch any debris that gets blown out of the tube. This being able to verify what came out.
1
I never knew why I shouldn't overfill. I thought Costco was trying to keep people from spilling. I now know why and promise I won't over fill again.
1
Empty brake cleaner cans on the floor. Safety, slip and fall hazard. Hate to see you and the camera feel the full effects of gravity by stepping on one.
1
My like is one of them in the 28k range. Did you say this is a give away jeep? Great promotion, not that you needed it, but hey it's money in the bank with future promotions.
1
Wow! I was surprised that it fired off the first crank.
1
Too bad the new big doors weren't already installed to give you better access.

Similar to my Kia Sportage. I found the tensioner bad, but someone used the 1/2" socket driver, the square portion that the socket mounts to, to move the tensioner and they cracked it in half. I don't know if the tension was low, but it was a pain to change the belt.
1
That's a pretty trippy gasket setup. I likes it.

What no gravity t-shirts?
