  1. I grew up on Maui and only left at retirement. Maui is unloading tons of prefab houses on the island recently. Maui has always been opposed to trailer parks and prefab homes and the situations they create when people get segregated to the areas they can afford. From 1969 to now, I've watched as money ruled the island. Politicians became millionaires by approving land deals and they had some investment somewhere in there to profit. They have divided the island into the haves and have nots. The exception was any local families that had generational land in the resort and high cost areas. The council has done what they could to flip the local families out in favor of investors and speculation. Most of the guys I grew up with, Hawaiian, Filipino, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese people had land handed down to them from grandparents. The money, combined with alcohol and drugs, was too much and so many sold out many acres of prime land just for that short term money. Part of this is that not everyone wanted to sell, but the taxes and other demands put on them by the State and County forced their hands.

  2. Just got off of the phone halfway through watching this video with my insurance agent. My homeowners insurance is going up $1000 a year come renewal in April. I moved my cars off to two different policies earlier and I will bundle the two cars for the $475 discount to home owners insurance. It's still crazy to have to pay more because of people living in disaster prone areas, while I have had zero claims in the 8 years I have had my home. I wonder if a government run insurance, minus the corruption might work better. My agent suggested more locally run insurance pools by state or even county. This might be a way to be more fair to the people and if they choose to live in a disaster prone area, they can pay for it, while those of us in safe areas aren't affected by everyone else's claims.

  5. I just got a reply when I was talking to a friend about the free money for immigrants. Here is a correction the news put out after that info with Hacienda. "Speaking to Newsweek, a spokesperson for Business Oregon, which funds the HCDC, said an advertisement for the grant was "not accurate," adding, "We have confirmed with Hacienda that their program is in fact open to both U.S. citizens and non-citizens." An attached statement from the HCDC said the flyer had "misstated these program requirements" with regard to U.S. citizens being excluded."

  7. Since buying my house, I have approximately $50,000 in repairs and upgrades that I didn't see when I bought the house. If I knew that it would have radically changed the deal and I probably wouldn't have bought it. Luckily, I paid $270k, spent $50k through additional loans and refinancing. Luckily my house is over $400k now, but it became tighter than I had expected it to be. All the work, trim and soffits, two all new HVAC and ducting, as well as solar, does add value, but if I wanted to sell, it cuts into how much I could make. I will stick it out because I like the place and can't imagine where else I would care to live, especially states or countries.

  10. All insurance companies should be a non profit benefit for people. Then all the money collected would remain in the coffers for disasters and not just buy the big wigs another yacht. This whole insurance game needs to be revised. Of course it won't ever be, because its entrenched into the pockets of rich and powerful people.
