Even here in the free west butter was seen as more luxurious than cheaper substitutes, sure everybody could buy it if they wanted, there was no shortage (in fact there was a surplus) but many didn't to save money. My parents only bought butter for special occasions, the rest of the year we ate margarine. This was as late as the 80s. As a child I didn't even like the taste of butter because I was not used to it.

I am a few years younger than you, but I remember the long matches between Karpov and Kasparov , we had them in the newspapers here in the west and I would cut out the matches as a 10 year old boy and replay them. I got to a level that i could beat my dad and granddad, but not further and never played in competition. Other games and sports got priority. but it was always somewhat popular here too, and our elementary school also had chess class , with the headmaster (it was optional, not required, I think about 20% of the kids took it. and most forgot about it, but at least they learned to play the game )

Watch the video on this channel about Boris Jeltsin visiting a random US supermarket. but basically every video on this channel leads to this conclusion. either the the soviets didn't get something at all, or they got it 'for free' but it was poor quality, outdated, or not enough, or rationed, or behind loooooong waiting lists. (and usually all of the above) Capitalism has many other problems, but creating wealth is not one of them.

  9.  @eoinoconnell185  true, but the american car would have electric windows, air conditioning, power steering, a proper stereo, automatic gears etc etc. but lada's for the export were pretty reliable in cold weather like in Canada. not a bad choice if you don;t care about luxuries

It's a craphole compared to other 1st world countries. a country where only money can make it livable. If you are a millionaire, yes then America can be a very nice place to live, because then you can buy your way out of the shit. but not if you are poor. I live in a wealthy european country.. I wouldn't trade my country for the USA if you would double my salary. If you would quadruple it, I would start thinking about it. (and yes I have visited the states a few times, and also other countries all over the world, to compare)

"Obama is a communist'' We need humor in these times. anyway, being a european I don;t know what the 2nd amendment is, is it about your freedom or your infatuation with firearms? I don;t think it matters much in this conversation about the wealth of nations. It's sad that you won't be able to travel to the EU, or I could show you that our food (in any regular supermarket grocery store) is cheaper and higher quality. I must admit we don't have quite as many choices in peanut butter or choco pops cereals that you guys have, but somehow we survived having 15 choices instead of 32. Switzerland is a nice place to live, but a bit expensive. I myself live in the Netherlands, Germany's little sibling.. (we are also slightly prettier, taller and wealthier, but the Germans do ok too) Oh, and we also have thrift stores! can you believe it! We also have freedom of movement, we can work freely in any EU country (we are a bit like the States in that regard) And my Dutch passport is just as strong worldwide as an USA one, so I can basically go anywhere just like you (except North Korea and a few of that kind of failed despotisms)

I once had a Toyota with an after market cruise control... which one day got stuck on 'full throttle' the car would speed up to 180km/h its max speed and I panicked for a while (I was on the german autobahn) until i got the bright idea to just turn off the engine and let it roll out...... :D

  14. young people here still play chess, more than I expected (I teach 16-20 year olds, who are not intellectuals, and it amazes me how often they play chess on their phone or laptop in class. sure tiktok etc gets way more time, but I expected chess to be near 0% and that is not the case, a few still seem to like it.

  19. Why didn't the soviets make (small) storage units on the ground floor or in the basement for the people living in apartment blocks. That doesn't cost too much and would make living better. In the west even the cheapest social housing blocks have this, so people can at least keep a bike or some other meager possessions under lock.

  24.  @UshankaShow  don't listen to him, he voted for a Dutch version of Tucker Carlson. In reality , we had some price increases, but not worse than other countries and not outrageous. my yearly rent increase was just $25 per month . Food went up, but some food has come down a bit since 2023

  28. Hello comrade Cheeseburger Wayne, you were right about the commercials, but it's not everywhere as bad as in USA. Here in Western Europe we have far less commercials, about 75% less. and in the UK, they even have BBC with 0 commercials (except for their own programs) but the UK people have to pay a yearly fee for that luxury. I hate commercials since childhood as well and never watch any tv program with commercials, In the old days I would tape it on VHS and get rid of them, or rent a video tape. And since the internet age I would download everything without ads and use every adblocker that is out there.

  34. Hello, I am from the same year, here in the Netherlands we used to be content with shoes and jeans that costed maybe fl 25-50 (22-45 Dmark) And we also passed them on to younger siblings or other kids. Only from about 1990 everybody 'needed' to have Nike or Reebok and Levis

  37. As a European I have never seen made in USA either. Everything is from China, Germany, Japan, India, Turkey, Taiwan...... (I- phones are also made in China or India) and we don;t buy american cars here

  40.  @quan-uo5ws  humans are humans and the system shapes the culture / country so 10 times with equal systems seems a bit of an exaggeration to me (as was my 10-20 times) you only have to look to china's growth from 2000 to 2020 to see that capitalism under dictatorship can also generate a lot of wealth. americans are not 10x as wealthy as chinese anymore (but they were in 1977)

  45.  @oldgysgt  that is a silly argument, if you do 4 washings every 2 weeks, that is the same as 1 wash twice a week...... Your machine doesn't magically require less energy if you do 4 in a row..... So basically you wash every couple of days, which is perfectly normal.

  46. I like the blah blah, keep doing it. the only thing you could maybe improve is try to give some more info on WHY the soviet system did certain things instead of just stating that they did A or B. Example: WHY would somebody working in Egypt get more pay than somebody in Hungary?
