  1. And that means Kudos to the teacher who helped you, but YOU did that; YOU turned yourself around and weren’t defeated by the obstacles your parents put in your way. That success is all yours! The question is, why can’t others? Nobody asks for the parents they get. If they suck at thinking about anyone but themselves, your predicament may be their fault, but the responsibility for your life is all your own. This ridiculous notion that people are entitled to be treated “fairly”, meaning get what everyone else gets no matter what the do is destructive. That is not how it works. If you choose not to help yourself and play the victim role, you are the one who loses.

  7. “Generational wealth” is often used to justify reparations. But what seems to be forgotten is the dilution of generational wealth with the increase in population. Let’s say “A” was an emancipated slave at the end of the civil war. Sherman’s (arguably temporary) general order giving 40 acres and mule would have meant “A” would have received the acre. Now “A” had 3 sons. When “A” died, the acre would have been split into thirds. The sons each had 3 children which meant the 1/3 acre of each so would have been divided into 3rds again and so on and so on through the generations. So when those who support generational wealth bring up being excluded from “generational wealth”, we should take a 1 acre lot and give every black American 5 square inches of it. That should be about right.

Or did you see you yourself as culpable because it was an accident. Should mistakes happen? No. Do they happen anyway? Yes. It’s very unfortunate and every effort should be made to keep them from happening, but they will still happen. Vilifying people for a mistake doesn’t help anything.

  45. The problem or disconnect here seems to be one of understanding. There seems to be a prevailing impression in black communities that NOT doing what a police officer tells you to do during an arrest, arguing with them about guilt or innocence (wrong time, wrong place for that), and trying to run away from the cops are EVER good ideas. That behavior in and of itself is a crime. NO ONE helps themself with that behavior. I think it’s imperative we give tutorials to the public about what LAW is, why we have it, what it’s for, how the criminal process works and what everyone’s role is in that process. Maybe that would help. Surely no one advocates theft or fraud, carrying a weapon when you shouldn’t have one, violence against another person. If that behavior were allowed by everybody, there would be chaos. So then how do we prevent people from engaging in these actions? Are there really thefts and fraud that “aren’t that bad”? Or people shouldn’t be held accountable for? Who should make that call? Is it based on amount of money,? where it occurred? How it occurred? These are NOT questions police officers are supposed to answer, agreed? That is for the legislature made up of elected representatives to work out. Police are there to enforce those decisions. Considering one needs but a GED to be a cop, it seems ridiculous to expect an officer to answer the questions above, assess the specific situation, and choose the appropriate amount of “force” to accomplish an arrest ALL with minimal information about the situation and in a split second. Could you do that perfectly every time? It’s not just law enforcement that needs to change its consciousness. Black communities need to develop a new understanding of the law and its purpose. This HAS to be a group project encompassing all Americans or its pointless. All this factioning is accomplishing nothing. Can we PLEASE STOP POINTING FINGERS AND ASK OURSELVES WHAT AND HOW WE CAN CHANGE AS INDIVIDUALS TO MAKE THINGS BETTER? EVERYONE will need to sacrifice and work together to get us out of this mess we’re in.
