The universe could be finite without curvature, light could arrive at different times without it being a torus, the big bang doesn't imply a finite past and so on. The question is not why, for example, an inner representation of the world is useful, but why it is experienced. Consciousness doesn't cause anything, it just is. Every explanation that makes it useful for something is fundamentally wrongheaded. By it's nature consciousness must have developed accidentally as a byproduct of something else.
