Now that's a proper train running at proper speeds! I realize that the US needs more high speed rail for real effectiveness, but this was a decent start, from my European perspective π. Looking forward to the series! Very impressed that you'll travel all the way over to Alaska by rail!

This thumbnail is so funny given how often you've travelled with her even on YouTube! But may it bring in many new viewers, and I'm looking forward to watching!

Wow, so much mayhem on day one! I just finished watching Kara and Nate cycle across the US in 36 days, and while their bike broke down a lot too, their back wheel only stopped spinning on day 30 or so... Either they got really lucky or adding just one more rider really increases the technical risks exponentially! I hope things got better for the race after day one...

Now there's something you don't see to often in train travel vlogs... Replacement transport. Unfortunately, this is a common reality of intensive railway transport through inhabited areas: every now and then there might be a traffic accident, but more often than that, it's suicide and it traumatises train drivers and attendants who are confronted with it. Very sad for all involved... As for the people in uniform at the station where you got on a bus, my guess would be that they weren't there investigating but rather just guiding travellers to the buses. That's how it tends to work in the Netherlands, anyway!

Pity about the bedbugs! I did wonder why you didn't go for a hostel instead of a hotel if it had to be cheap, but I guess that wasn't the challenge you had set yourself? Also, if I ever make it to Vancouver I think Chinese food will be at the top of my list :)
19
Interesting how the ferry and the surrounding area look like something out of the Netherlands, and then a short drive further on you have mountains and big green rainforests and waterfalls! π

This brings back memories. First of my first trip to Scotland when I was twelve in 1992, and then, when I started wondering why I also had memories of eating scallops at a restaurant on the water in Fort William, and and a huge supermarket, of my second time, around 2005. Beautiful country! I'm really looking forward to your Caledonian Sleeper video and I hope everything worked when you were on it! (it doesn't always, apparently)

6:35 aha! I was surprised that it didn't seem like they'd built in a time buffer, earlier. This makes a lot more sense :)
16
What a wonderful trip! Its always a joy to see Will, and it's great to see Austyn thriving again after his head injury!
16
A ferry that's called a sea bus... That's funny!
14
Oh man, I want to be on this train so bad! (Sidebar, as a European train enthusiast's daughter, I can't imagine first boarding a train at 17!) Also, railway staff waving you off - it's like something straight out of Japan!
10
That does seem like a great airport hotel! And I was relieved to see you get a lot of fresh air while staying there too. Being cooped up for 24 hours wouldn't have been so fun!

I've heard great things about the local food scene and the boreal rain forest, but now I just want to visit Vancouver for the colourful houses and the coffee! I legit teared up a little at the sight of those coffee shops - I've improved my home coffee a lot but I really miss getting a latte from a proper barista at a nice place!

This was beautiful! And I was surprised to see those Belgian beers on the boat. Takes me back to some traditional Belgian cafΓ© experiences :)
5
So cool! Normally I hold off on watching your videos until after dinner here in the Netherlands, but now it was the perfect thing to take my mind off my horrible cold as my partner cooks π

7:45 "how does my hair look?" better than Michael's without the cap, man ;)

It never ceases to amaze me how far south the most populous parts of Canada actually are. The southern tip of Hudson Bay is as far south as the Netherlands (where I live), and Toronto is equal to something in southern Europe! Also: I had a funny moment when you first showed a close-up of Swiss Andy, and I was like, what do I know that guy from? How can he look familiar? But he must have been on Instagram months ago, lol!
5
I love seeing how everything works behind the scenes! thanks!
5
Ohhh, of course! I just didn't get that originally, so thanks for explaining!
5
Beautiful. I'm glad virtually no one in the Netherlands ever gets stuck on a train as long as you did, because our rail network is much more closely knit so you can typically go around a road block even if it takes hours, but we don't get the majestic views you did!
5
YES more tugboat content! Super interesting what a day is actually like. Essentially waiting for 7-9 hours while you tug a log boom upstream... That would really tax my patience (I would also not do well on a river transport ship in Europe)! I'm also fascinated by the word log boom. I looked it up and boom was borrowed from the Dutch word boom 'tree' (pronounced 'bome') so log boom almost sounds like 'tree tree' to me! But boom has obviously picked up some more specific meanings in English :)

Oh man, Canada just keeps on getting more incredible! Wow. PEI must really be quite something if you were so excited for it!
4
Happy anniversary and congratulations on 750k! I really enjoyed the original quad tandem series and that had fewer teams and probably lower production values... So I'm stoked!
4
1:25 did you arrive in Dublin in the middle of the night? Because normally there is a very reasonably priced bus! (I feel like an expert because I've visited the city and the country exactly once and I took that bus, lol!)
4
'run, run! We need to catch the train and set up the camera in several places along the way! π
4
That amazing! But 5 hours in a tunnel on one day would be a bit much for me π
3
Super realistic though! I remember when I was headed to an island in the Caribbean for the first time (I'm from Europe) and the plane doors opened during a stopover in the Caribbean... I didn't know what hit me and a steamed up bathroom was literally the only experience I could compare it to π
3
I think Mike mentioned he just wanted a light breakfast though, so this must be what he ordered.
3
This was wonderful! I'm so looking forward to the rest of the series - I love Norway and the fact that I got a bit emotional several times during this video means my love extends to the rest of the Nordics π¬. Tip for architecture lovers planning to visit Helsinki: watch the latest video on Archimarathon! They discuss and show some more great architecture around the central station. And one more thing: I love how those wide-gauge trains look so similar to Dutch and German ones but then they fit a lot more furniture in and their noses look slightly off!
3
Funny... That Saturday I travelled to Germany and back from the Netherlands by train and it was unusually slow because so many trains had been diverted to Zandvoort! I did manage to stay dry though π
3
A steam train running on oil? I didn't know that was a thing! Thanks for all the technical details, this was so interesting!
3
wow, they take so many types of recycling in one truck! where I live in the Netherlands, we need to take glass to a recycling station in our neighborhood (glass is how recycling started in the Netherlands and Germany!), but paper, garden/food waste, plastic/cans/milk cartons and non-recyclable garbage are all collected in their own large bins every few weeks, on different days of the week. and some of the trucks will grip, lift and empty the bins on their own at the push of a button!
2
ohhhhh, now I get the pun! I was writing it in Italian in my mind, Danini, and I didn't get it at allπ
2
Don't know if the food is also included in the business class price, but if it is, I'd go for that!
2
Heyy, this is where I saw my real-life narrowboats! In the Gas Street Basin! They all looked so charming, even if visiting Birmingham over land was definitely also worth it π
2
1:05 aha - I thought I'd seen that word in a Japanese context!
2
Wait, aren't a giant sequoia and a redwood the same species? What's going on there?
2
We'll all get to eat out again! I am sooooo looking forward to it, though. In the meantime, I'm just thankful for what I get to order in...
2
Wow, that's a big change! Congratulations on the marriage - your outfits were so prosaic even for just-a-legal-marriage, it made me laugh! I hope Nicole likes her new job, I'm curious about your Hong Kong apartment (is it even smaller than the Vancouver one?), and I'm definitely here for real-time stories on Instagram. You had a lot going on in your IG hiatus last year!
2
And let us know you're coming to the Netherlands in advance for a meetup!
2
Fascinating! I remember reading about this practice in a romance novel from the 1980s, of all places, and it's so cool to finally see it!
2
This was amazing!
2
Oof, that was a hard day! It was so dry for so long this summer, it makes sense that the levels would have lowered so much (and maybe even more later on?). Glad you made it through! And that initial lock complex was fascinating. Looking forward to the final video! And seriously considering doing some narrow boating myself sometime.
2
I can't believe they let you work the locks on your own there! That's not a thing in the Netherlands AFAIK, but then again our lock density is probably much lower, as we're flatter? Also, man, I miss summer!
2
Saudi Arabia looks amazing - I would quite like to visit if women are granted full human rights there before I get too old to travel!
2
I think this is going to be an amazing series! And I'm really glad that you'll still have biweekly videos for us :)
2
What a fun and interesting day! π
2
What a joy! The Porsche 911 Carrera was my favourite car when I was a little girl and that love only cooled when I got to ride in one and got very very queasy π . I hope that would be less on ice!
2
Sturgeons as long as my boyfriend is tall! So glad they are all released. And it looks like you've managed to have a pretty great summer in spite of Covid.
2
What an absolute joy! I watched this one with a sense of wonder and a big grin on my face. Restored rail cars in use are the best and these are some really special ones!
