But looking up the stats on Wikipedia, was shocking. $294/yr average income, least happy African country, deforested, corruption, etc. I’m looking for an outsider’s impression, of travel, safety, food, etc there.

  8.  @gemox3225  I’m Canadian, married to a mainlander, 14 years here. She is so jaded, she thinks all governments talk crap. But then defends the Chinese government “facts”. I say, when all the information goes through the ministry of truth, it’s all garbage. She doesn’t see the difference.

  17.  @alu1706  It can be quite the rabbit hole. Two weeks before my 60th birthday. My Chinese wife asked what I want. I said, no gifts, no party, just some close time with you. What ever you are comfortable with, in an intimate, romantic, possibly sexy kind of way. A few days later she asked, “no really, what do you want”? It didn’t happen. But I did take her, to the mountains, and an air BNB, for her birthday. Of course, she was still entitled, to complain about it, afterwards. Same with other holidays.

  25. A timely topic. Just the other day, driving past the “sky train” station, in Vancouver. My Chinese born wife said, “when I came here, transit payment, was on the honour system” “Now it isn’t, did we do that”? She wasn’t born, under Mao. But her parents were. So you get another generation, that is angry, and messed up. Many chinese families, are still very fractured.

  26. Calling it like it is, The greed=religion comment, is hopefully not true with all, but way too many. It is a problem. But by saying it, you put a target on your back. There is so little room, to debate issues, with mainlanders. I work at rental property building maintenance, in Vancouver. Most of the owners are Chinese. They seem to only see the numbers. Make tenant pay!!

  40.  @americanfreedomworldpeace  The difference I found, is. In China, they are reminded of perceived insults against them. Deflecting, from the current 70 years of humiliation. While in Vietnam, a country that has been repeatedly occupied, or attacked. Doesn't cling to old grudges. The people are proud, open, and friendly. They may not like their government. But at least, it's their own people.

  49. My wife was from Beijing, 14 years ago. She wanted to get away from the politics. Yet, when my stepson, and I, told her of the different federal parties. She voted conservative, in the recent Canadian election. Because the Chinese wechat group said so. Has no patience for, the Hong Kong protests, or for people of colour. I’m frequently baffled, that she wants to be seen as Canadian, but says she can’t give up the “hive mind”.

  50. Good luck, with your future. I’m older, so also feel responsible. The problem with these videos, is they just don’t get coverage. Talk to your politicians, business leaders, church, friends.
