Such a unique car. My grandpa’s got an old Renault from the early 70s, and a lot of the controls in the Alpine look really familiar to me. Great video! :)

Interesting, I’ve never thought about the start/stop in relation to cooling the turbo. I would always turn it off in my old F30 328i, as I tried to do everything to prolong the life of the timing chain guides on that garbage N20. The point you made about continuing cooling the turbo is just another reason to leave the engine on.

I love how your logo’s colors match with the GX’s white exterior and dark wheels. Aesthetically pleasing :)
10
R129 for me too!! One of the best looking convertibles ever made :)
10
Love these things. They’re the perfect size and they feel so overbuilt. They’re fun to drive in the sense of its maneuverability and the power/noise.

Great video! I love the balanced approach you took with reviewing this car. Personally, I like this significantly more than the F80 generation. The S58 sounds better, and it seems like it makes its power higher up in the rev-band than the S55. Sure, it’s tail happy, but the F80 was stupidly tail happy. Could barely put its power down unless conditions were perfect. From what I saw here, it put its power down pretty well. Seemingly more sophisticated TC system than in the F80. Also, the interior build quality has improved over the F80. I don’t get the point of the M4, as it’s gotten too big to be a tossable coupe. The M3 makes a lot more sense. Can’t wait for the M2, and I genuinely think the worst thing about the G80/G82 is the looks. Sure, the steering still needs improvement but from what I’m hearing otherwise it’s much improved over the F80.

Such a sweet car and experience. Small displacement high-revving motors are such a delight. Really like the green on this one.
10
Wish we got the diesel variants in the US. Literally would be perfect that way.

Nice video!! It’s always fun when you put out a video that’s not necessarily about cars but on how to improve ourselves. Reflecting on how to be a better person is also important :)
9
I’m glad the Porsche’s out again. The videos where you bring it out for the season are some of my favorite :)
9
I’m glad that we can finally import and experience these legends. It looks so engaging to drive!!

Man, I didn’t know these were available with a manual in the US. I’ve always heard horror stories about this car with the automated manual in the first gen. This could make a fun city car! Cool video :)
8
Thanks for the transmission talk. There’s a time and place for each transmission. I definitely prefer driving manual, but there are cars that would be significantly worse if they were with a manual.
8
@alangil40 Yes, totally agree with you. Also, while the 540i’s steering wasn’t the best because of it being a steering box, it was still better than the EPS in the F10s. It had road feel and you were connected with the car. Hold on to that E60 as long as you can!!! It’s exactly how you said. It’s the last 5 series that still feels like a BMW. Also, 997.2 is an awesome car. Dream garage right there that you’ve got!!
8
Love the sound of that engine, and in green it just looks proper. Off topic, but if you ever get the chance I’d recommend driving an 05/06 E320 cdi. They’re rare, but in many ways it’s the end of an era for Mercedes diesels. Loads of power, the awesome I6 diesel sound, and they’re bulletproof compared to the diesels that came out after.
7
You know it’s a great car when it’s already tickling you in all the right ways as you leave the parking lot. That was me when I drove a Chevy SS with the 6 speed. I got a speeding ticket 2 miles into the drive, but that’s a different story😂 CT5-V Blackwing with the manual >>> F90 M5
7
@RyanRoadReaper You’re right. However, if the oil change intervals were sane (5-7k miles not BMW’s 15-20k interval), they can last a long time. I know 2 people with around 200k miles on original N62 valve stem seals, and they’re doing just fine. They did maintain the car religiously.
7
Thanks for an update on the M5. I’ve loved the E39 since early high school and I’m still obsessed with the design+driving dynamics. Gives me warm fuzzy feelings every time I see one.
7
Thank you for finally doing one of these. The ZF cars are such a great value, and they sound so so good and are so wonderful to drive. You can hear them coming from a mile away, and they’re beautiful to look at. Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year, Tom! :)
7
Those exterior shots were so cool! What a cool event to be part of! E39 M5 FTW!!
6
So glad to see the M5 back in action. I love these drives where we hear you talk and give updates. The size comparison between the E39 and the Type R is wild. I have a similar situation with an E90 parked next to a previous generation Mazda 3. The Mazda looks larger. Keep the M5 updates coming, really no car seems to be able to do everything altogether as well as the E39 M5.
6
And you’ve done an amazing job out of it! Happy New Year!!!

I drove a base Model X a few months ago and it totally changed my perception on electric cars. The placement of the batteries makes it handle really well for its weight, and you can do truly stupid speeds in short spurts and nobody knows. It’s so smooth and it makes so much sense. Made me a fan of electric cars for sure. If I don’t have a manual, the car might as well be electric because it just makes the experience smoother and less clunky! Great video!!
6
Not a fan of the GTR, but I’m happy to see a video from you! Your commentary while driving is very interesting and it describes what’s going on very well!
6
Always enjoy these story time drives. I had a similar situation with a friend years ago, but I can’t imagine how much worse it would have been if it were a really close friend. But it’s definitely a nice car to have to remember him by :)
6
That double pull for the hood is great until the stupid thing breaks. It might have happened to me, won't confirm that :)). For me, I think I like the pre-lci version more just because the B58 didn't need further complications with the 48 volt system. It was more than fuel efficient enough before they added this system. Plus, reasonably sized grilles. Cool video!
6
This car's awesome!! I love the sound. The whole driving experience must be amazing :)
5
Love these Porsche/life updates. Unfortunate that you got pulled over :/
5
I’ve always appreciated this gen of V12 S Class. Definitely a fantastic sleeper!!
5
UGH, I’ve got a project to work on but how can I not watch a 997 GT3 video from Tedward?!😂
5
Unrelated to the car, but the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Not sure if you guys filmed these after the rain that they had, but it’s very rare for it to be that green out there. Awesome stuff :)
5
@nodak81 Only gotta do the oil pump belt once in the 100-150k mile range. I agree, it’s a dumb design but if it doesn’t have issues then🤷🏻♂️.
4
Yeah, it seems like the 1-2 shift is annoying on modern BMWs. Hard to get it smooth. Also, my family's manual F30 328i revs relatively high at 80 mph. Still gets 35 mpg at that speed. And, because the revs are high, it just takes off at that speed.
4
@al3xztv442 Love to hear it. My story with this car is I had a very well off friend whose family had one back in 2010-2011. Facelifted S version with the ZF 6 speed. Will never forget how special the car felt, even just riding around it. It treated them very well for the 4-5 years they had it. It loved regular, high speed driving. The killer on these cars is letting them sit.
4
Tom (Tedward) would not praise something that’s no good. I can assure you, the stock run-flat tires these cars come with are absolute garbage. Even without driving the tires he has in this video, I’ve never ever driven a car on run-flats thinking that they were good.
4
She’s BACK! Love to see it!! Also, near the end where you mixed washing the car with the relaxing music was spot on.
4
Nice video. You say the E90 335i handles like a dog, but have you driven any F30 without the sport package. Or any F30 without heavy suspension modifications :))). I don't know about you, but the E90 328i rwd model handles really well even without the sport package. It feels awesome!
4
Michigan’s so pretty once you get out of the Metro Detroit area😂. It’s interesting how good the front end looks on this car after we’ve had some time to get used to it. Car’s a monster!!
4
This is the only EV I’d consider as it’s the only one fully capable of running over the peasants in their sub 9k lb vehicles. If I can’t be a traffic liability and brag about being green, then what’s the point?!
4
Loved this video. This generation of truck with this motor is near and dear to me, because I grew up around a family friend that had one. It always worked, always did the job, and it sure sounded great. This one being a manual is so cool!
4
I briefly had the chance to drive a RWD TI sport 2 years ago. I just remember taking a highway onramp and leaving everyone behind. It felt so planted and placeable. The steering was fantastic. Also, another perk of the 4 cylinder models is that they’ve been significantly more reliable than the Quadrifoglio models. Great video!!
4
I have a feeling that this video’ll do really well. It’s such an interesting car. Yeah, problematic but fascinating nonetheless. I’ve always wanted to try one out. So modern compared to its contemporaries, and I wish I could learn what sort of rustproofing techniques they used on this vehicle. I’ve never seen one with rust in the midwest, which is saying something. Edit: N62s are questionable in terms of reliability, but the N63 that came after is 10x worse imo. I personally think the N63 was the worst engine they’ve ever made.
3
One of my favorite cars (when facelifted). So much personality to that car, and I think it’s beautiful. But the sound coming out of that car is probably the best part.
3
Awesome car and great video! Thanks for bringing up the point about sidewall, I personally feel that too many luxury automakers aren’t considering ride quality as much as they used to when fitting massive wheels. Right after watching this, I watched your video on the 745li. The E65 generation was hated by many but the suspension tech on that car was incredible. Even though the variants with the smaller 18 inch wheels had sidewall, the active hydraulic anti-roll system allowed for that sublime balance between ride quality and handling.
3
Great video!! Concise and lots of good info! There aren’t a lot of good videos comparing the two.
3
Yes!! I’ve always wondered how these drive. Whether they’re overhyped or not but it actually seems awesome. Nice video!
3
Cool car! I don’t know if I’d want to be in one on the highway😂
3
I love how these cars look. It's such a unique experience!
3
Love the editing. I’m happy to see the E92 put to work :)

Enjoyed watching this in the morning. Question: why was the new 3 series so bad? Besides the rattling interior, did it not drive well? It looked pretty good in the video. I haven’t had the chance to drive one yet, so I’m curious. Also, you hit the nail right on the head with the F30. My dad owns a 328i stick, and other than it being stick, it doesn’t have much going for it. The interior’s super cheap compared to the E90, the steering’s awful, the suspension’s floaty, and it doesn’t ride well. Surprisingly, I enjoy the N20 motor. Best turbo 4 I’ve driven so far in terms of smoothness and power delivery!
