Debra is so level-headed about this hot potato. I like her.

While you can interpret the Bible as a message of humility, many people treat the Bible as a source of certainty and confidence. A common criticism of atheism is the lack of a frame of reference which is supposed to lead to decay of moral principles.

"The Chinese have not made technological progress the last 15 years." Based on what? Their scientific publications in high ranked journals has increased significantly.
56
Not unthinkable that there was a person there. Did you check before demolishing the building?
52
I just watched the whole episode. I can't believe Joe talked to him about batteries without mentioning the issue of mining.
42
With enough elevation and understanding, one may cause an avalanche with a nudge.
34
I don't think he's used to talking on topics at length. He makes strong assertions on various controversial topics, but when Joe asks him to substantiate or elaborate he has little to say and quickly ends up speaking nonsense or contradicting himself before moving on to the next strong assertion. He said he liked Twitter? Well there you go.

In german: ei is pronounced "eye" ie is pronounced "ee" ...but grammar is probably secondary when it comes to names.

"Most Chinese do not have natural immunity due to the containment strategy." I've heard that they have realized the actual number is much higher since a lot of people have bought false certificates showing they're negative.

Not all of them has neutrons firing in their brain.
25
Considering Joe is an outspoken advocate of Tulsie Gabbard, I really felt he should have challenged this guy's pro-intervention narrative more.
22
I will have to watch this two more times. Mike is an archive.

My experience is that conquering goals is seldom as satisfying as the journey towards it.

What are you trying to sell me?

The Oppenheimer clip is from 1965 and he's describing his reaction to the Trinity nuclear bomb test in 1945. Bhagavad Gita concerns prince Arjuna's doubts before a war of succession against an army which includes friends, cousins and teachers. Prince Arjuna is persuaded by the god Vishnu that war is his fate, which is for Vishnu to decide. What did Oppenheimer find relevant in this story? He seems to have viewed the bomb as Vishnu and himself as Arjuna: (1) he found himself in a war of succession (who will determine the new world order?); (2) the war troubled him, because (in his view) his enemy is also his kin; (3) the terror and awe invoked in him by the Trinity test made him conclude that the world is on an inevitable trajectory. With or without his contribution, the technology of nuclear weapons was inevitable, and it was here to destroy, so he may as well carry out his role. http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2014/05/23/oppenheimer-gita/

Why is Joe letting Bill Maher talk him into going on his show? Clearly he doesn't want to and Bill only wants it to promote his own show.
13
When clown shows like these happen I stop and watch in awe.
11
I think he was referring to biological machines void of thought and experience, as a philosophical concept, rather than criticizing real people with apathy.

The ending is a quite fascinating way to view life. All possibilities are there from the start and all we do it trim it down. Makes me think of Jordan Peterson's rant about the "adult infant" who prefers to keep all options open. I can relate to the anxiety of choosing, knowing all the other options are lost.
9
Right or wrong, I appreciate his perspective.

@hre2044 That's essentially the story of most self-help authors. "Buy my book about how to succeed. I'm obviously an expert on this topic, because I was poor before I released this book."
9
Really interesting point about the "Tree of life" being a rather crude oversimplification and that it is more like a web.
8
He's doing healthy shit, but also unhealthy shit.
8
I've noticed that whenever Joe has trouble following a topic, his skepticism is turned up. I think this is a healthy reaction, considering it is a common strategy within conspiracy theory and pseudo-science to hide flaws and gaps behind unnecessarily complicated terminology. This deceptive strategy often fails when pressed on details and clarifications.
7
The economically stable introverts, yes. The rest are in trouble.
5
The smugness of win-win: "You worked 60% of your life for my profit, yes, but I also gave you a banana in return. See, we both won!"
5
This guy is seriously funny haha! I like him.

A legal alien from South Africa.

It seems Brendan has fallen into the trap of arguing against the easiest targets he can find, ignoring the more rational, nuanced and balanced voices in their ranks. He seems to argue against "the myopic young people in Europe", whoever that is.
5
Yeah I hear you. It seems he has a bit of an inferiority complex from childhood struggles with learning disabilities. On the other hand, he's undeniably intelligent, thoughtful and speaks very well. I gladly tolerate his flaws to hear his perspective.
4
I think most of us are their tools, not their toys.

I think a healthy way of looking at fiat currency is that we allow investments to pay for themselves, rather than relying only profits from previous investments. It is more risky, yes, because we don't know for sure that the investment will pay off, but this is undeniably useful. It allows us to escape dire situations where new investments cannot be made because profits from previous investments are, for one reason or another, not available. Though it has some side effects which can be exploited. A fiat currency means that the amount of money in circulation and thus its value is to a higher degree controlled by policy, meaning it is more easily subject to manipulation. For example, the cost of labor can be controlled by inflating the (assuming salaries do not scale accordingly). This likely played a role in the stagnation of median male income.
4
A perpetual cliffhanger, never gets to the point. It's like he uses mystery only to keep us listening to his babbel.
4
Those channels will die along with the dinosaurs on which they depend
4
He warned Joe that it was a lengthy tangent and he asked if he should stay on track. Quite understandable.
4
Here's an exercise for you: Define "social construct" and explain to me why Thaddeus Russel is not one.
3
@bradszymanski1339 Controversial topic, that's all. Though Joe's dome is kinda hot.

1:15:25 Paraphrasing David: "Saying that far left and far right extremism are equally concerning is a false equivalence I don't want to take part in." Well, if you compare far-right abortion adversaries to far-left universal healthcare advocates, yeah, that's a false equivalence. Universal healthcare advocates are main stream, not far-left.
3
Yeah what rational person would be afraid of a stranger cutting at your body while you are asleep. What could possibly go wrong?
3
Really fascinating to hear the perspective of people who enter "our world" in adult life! Must be such a mindfck.
3
@Steven T I think the reality is that he is a legitimate intellectual, yet overcompensates with convoluted language due to personality flaws, leaving skeptical listeners full of doubt.
3
Dave White Tell me all about what makes you think that.
3
It's pretty hart to argue with a guy who counters every problem with: "sure, but future will solve that" Smells like a hypothesis that can't be disproven, i.e. psuedoscience.
3
@MrZachtheKingsfan I agree. I criticised his argument that the Bible keeps us humble, because the effect seems to mostly be the opposite. It offers an artificial sense of certainly which discourages us from reflection and discussion.
3
3:11:28 70% tax on income/capital gain over $10M. "Then they'll get to $10M and then they'll stop." I don't think that's true. First of all, since you can use previous gains to leverage future profits, rewards and work packages are not evenly distributed over the wealth ladder. I'm paraphrasing Robert Kiyosaki: "Don't work for money, make money work for you!". So even if the reward waiting at the next step of the ladder is cut by 70%, the reward is still rather sizable. Secondly, I think many people in that league are past the accumulation of wealth as their primary motivation. They're interested in realizing their visions and shaping the world. I think the best economic argument against raising taxes on wealth would be that this simply causes companies to relocate to nations which offer them lower taxes. This is why we need a serious international discussion on taxes, something which is understandably somewhat of a taboo among the elite (see Rutger Bregman at Davos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5LtFnmPruU ).

This episode had a good flow in it. Just pleasant to listen to. Stephen is so chill!

If we're going to move the limits of free speech, it should be done through legislation, not because some woke employee decides.

@666atyler666 But to be fair, heads are seldom impaled from a distance.

@ArcaneEiro Yes...?
2
Yeah, judging by the comment section humans definitely crossbred with some stale genepools, or fucked down if you will.
