It's pretty hart to argue with a guy who counters every problem with: "sure, but future will solve that" Smells like a hypothesis that can't be disproven, i.e. psuedoscience.

@MrZachtheKingsfan I agree. I criticised his argument that the Bible keeps us humble, because the effect seems to mostly be the opposite. It offers an artificial sense of certainly which discourages us from reflection and discussion.

3:11:28 70% tax on income/capital gain over $10M. "Then they'll get to $10M and then they'll stop." I don't think that's true. First of all, since you can use previous gains to leverage future profits, rewards and work packages are not evenly distributed over the wealth ladder. I'm paraphrasing Robert Kiyosaki: "Don't work for money, make money work for you!". So even if the reward waiting at the next step of the ladder is cut by 70%, the reward is still rather sizable. Secondly, I think many people in that league are past the accumulation of wealth as their primary motivation. They're interested in realizing their visions and shaping the world. I think the best economic argument against raising taxes on wealth would be that this simply causes companies to relocate to nations which offer them lower taxes. This is why we need a serious international discussion on taxes, something which is understandably somewhat of a taboo among the elite (see Rutger Bregman at Davos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5LtFnmPruU ).

This episode had a good flow in it. Just pleasant to listen to. Stephen is so chill!

If the goal of Hamas is to exterminate Jews, why do they take hostages?

If we're going to move the limits of free speech, it should be done through legislation, not because some woke employee decides.

@666atyler666 But to be fair, heads are seldom impaled from a distance.
2
@ArcaneEiro Yes...?
2
Does Douglas think China has concentration camps? Would be interesting to hear.
2
Yeah, judging by the comment section humans definitely crossbred with some stale genepools, or fucked down if you will.

Goes to show JRE is less biased than NYT.

About hyperventilation: A commonly practiced method to return to normal breathing is to breath into a paper bag (rebreathing), however, this seems controversial among experts. Considering James advice to defy your instinct to breath more, perhaps it is a way to mechanically force you to breath slower? Or maybe it has to do with raising the CO2 level through re-circulation?
2
@Casey Barthell Why do you assume that the reason I'm hesitant to revise my understanding of history is that I prefer to view african americans as lesser human beings? If there is evidence I should know about, show it to me, instead of making presumptions about my character.
2
If you are saying Eric is not intelligent, I think you have set the bar ridiculously high.
2
I mean, monkies are literally spending all day every day in a jungle gym.
2
Have knee and lower back issues. I'm gonna try this guy's exercises.
2
Physics is pretty dope tho. Do you even math?
2
Thank you, was looking for the conspiracy theories.
2
The only thing half the comment section seem to have taken away from this interview is that Jenny is a SJW. Personally I enjoyed this quite a lot. She introduced me to a range of new ideas.
2
Amen to that! (not my search history though)

I wanted 2.5h of Robert melting down about surveillance and manipulation by big tech. He ended up talking at length outside of his expertise about dreams and memories. Spoiled episode, Thanks to Joe.

What makes gold unique is that it doesn't oxidize easily. This makes it excellent for contact surfaces in electronics and allows it to remain lustrous over time. I'm guessing this is also what makes it possible to spread gold thin without breaking. Most other metals would oxidize and crack at that thickness.

@Laneous14 From a 2021 Nature article: "China has the largest number of science and engineering bachelor and master students in the world and its R&D expenditures are expected to surpass the US shortly." "The rapid rise of China has made other top research nations (US, UK, Germany, France, and Japan) gradually lose their shares, first in numbers of publications, then in citations, and now in highly cited works." Also, about a fifth of students at Harvard are Chinese. That seems like a poor strategy for Harvard if China's education system produces hopelessly uninventive people. This is a recent development. It takes time to turn science into technology. But I expect their innovation output to rise soon.

@Spencer3712 How does fear of nuclear escalation result in more resources for defense and military contractors? I would rather expect that this leads to fading support for Ukraine and de-escalation of the conflict with Russia.
2
Thank god I read this at 2:04:00. Didn't notice until now and now I can't ignore it.
2
Would love to see him go uninhibited and full blast.
2
This reeks of distraction politics.

Planting trees to counter CO2 is indeed stupid. In most places on earth, forests grow naturally without human assistance, if we just leave it alone. Rather than planting trees, companies should buy land and turn it into natural reserves, thus permanently expanding forested areas.

I feel like a lot of Jordan's arguments during this interview boils down to "don't try to solve complicated problems because you can not predict the outcome". Seems like a very conservative mindset. You can't base the future solely on the past! You have to try new things! That's how the historical data was generated in the first place. History should be used to avoid repeating mistakes, not to constrain our search for solutions to those that worked in the past.
2
@replynotificationsdisabled I'm sorry I can't follow your argument. What's absolute about not believing?
2
@Thomas-ht9cn If you're asking me, you missed the point.
2
Bitcoins aren't for spending, silly. They are for hedging and speculation.
2
@DigamberPradhan89 Thank you! Sloppy mistake.
2
@ullas9999 I'm flattered, though I must confess I relied on secondary sources.
2
I'm blown away by their musicianship. So soulful!
2
The classic justification goes something like: we get the cobolt, they get $10/day, so win-win. Who are you to deny them this opportunity to earn a living?
2
You gon cwy?
2
Title should be "Mike Baker fails to light cigar". Most entertaining part!
2
@eamon4279 I think it's also about Joe recognizing that he has a diverse audience, with varying age, background, interests and education. Taking it a bit slower, clarifying difficult concepts, elaborating on facts, clarifying context, etc makes the interview accessible to more viewers.

If petroleum exists, how come no one discovered it for hundreds of thousands of years, and then all of a sudden in 19th century, petroleum was (magically) discovered across the globe.
1
47? These guys really demonstrate that age is to a great extent a matter of mindset.
1
Let's say he is. So what?
1
I think what Ronda is saying is if everyone make sure to leave the world a little better than when they got here, this doesn't mean you won't be happy, it means you won't have to try so hard because you will be living in a world that makes you happy.
1
In what way?

Well pardon me Goggins for having the audacity to enjoy my finite time on earth instead of forcing myself through heaps of pain and suffering. What does Goggins accomplish anyway with all that effort? At best he stays fit/healthy. Clearly overrated.
1
Joe should probably invite Mark Blyth to the podcast for the sake balance in this discussion. Peter Schiff is obviously an anti-government Zealot.
1
It must feel really stupid crashing rockets while trying to go to Mars with human low-tech.
1
Live speech/conversation isn't without filters. You still have your dear frontal contex.

Ah shit, not spotify.

"When I was a little kid in Queens and I had no money and I needed to save myself, the way I got out was by sounding smart, not being smart. That was the skill I perfected. So I am hardwired to always rehearse things so I will always sound smart. It's a disease, it keeps me from being happy." 2:02:20 To be honest, there were several times during this podcast where I sensed that this guy tries hard to come off as some kind of oracle who has all the right answers. He won back my respect with this paragraph.
