  1.  @tgreaux5027  if you wish to run a charity no one is stopping you. By the same token you cannot begrudge anyone else from maximizing their earning potential either. Some realize that hay must be made while the sun is shining. Someone could come along tomorrow with a product that makes what Nvidia sells obsolete. Then they only have the money they've made up to that point. It could end at any time. The more likely scenario is companies destroying themselves through poor business decisions. Often it just takes one misstep and it's all down the drain. But if you can make a little extra and manage to sock it away maybe you can survive some misfortune? Ultimately is about survival. Cash is king too. Personally I think Nividia just about hanged themselves with RTX. Instead of chasing framerates they went after and delivered raytracing which no one wanted. They're just damned lucky those lemon cards still perform fairly decent. On a less firm financial footing they may have gone belly up with a misstep like that though. Their present overly long line up may even be a reflection of lackluster sales and them trying to boost sales and cash flow?

  2. With mouse pads you just have to think outside the box. You can use them as more than just mouse pads. They make good isolators too. I use the thick rubber and cloth ones under bench grinders. Then it's almost like they're bolted down.

  6. Someday hopefully we'll develop a new technology that is just as revolutionary as solid state was from the vacuum tube. Cores is growing out. That is sprawl. Clock speed is growing up like skyscrapers. They're both growth but up is a lot more impressive to behold than out is.

  9. How close do you imagine any trace is to a mounting hole? There are design rules used in laying out board art. I for one would imagine the rules used to layout a 2080ti are rather comprehensive and strict. The keep out gap around mounting holes is likely substantial on all layers too.

  12. I guess if I got those results I'd have a different opinion. As it was when I let my motherboard OC it just went 200 MHz faster. I don't really have the CPU cooler to do any better than that, or an unlocked CPU either. Someday I might get a better CPU for this system if I see them drop in price to a value I figure is worthwhile. I'll more likely just build a faster system by then though.

  16. AMD is just a fabless design house today. The people that founded Intel invented the integrated circuit. So I would not count them out quite yet.

I always had old beaters so I never got in the habit of listening to a radio driving being as they never had working radios. Now even when I'm driving a car that has a radio I never turn it on. I just listen to the road noises. That's my soundtrack when I'm driving.

  19. As a corporation interested in making money Intel does not concern itself with what a few consumers want. You'll buy whatever they're offering and you'll be happy with it. Or you won't. It makes no difference to them. Amazon and Google will buy all the chips they can make. They'll in turn use those devices to make even more fortunes.

  21. The sheet rock is not stuck right to the concrete block. There are metal fur strips in there. But yeah if it was me I'd build false set walls. Which in a building are called temporary walls. For a start the gantry they built is OK though. Might want to paint those 2x4s flat black or something so they don't stand out so much.

  23. Nvidia has a product for everybody. AMD is just for people who hate the planet. 300 Watts for a video card? AMD must think they're making Easy Bake oven elements. My whole PC doesn't use 300W.

  25.  @pagatryx5451  Microsoft does not have to try to beat Linux. They've trounced on Linux. Over 80% of the market runs Windows. Linux enjoys a less than 2% adoption rate. I can see a lot of people liking Windows 11. It'll do OK despite what some are saying here now. I bet most of them will run it anyways.

  27. I wouldn't expect Intel to bounce back for quite some time. But a few months ago Intel invested several times more into their fabs than AMD is worth. That investment should begin to pay off when all of that capacity comes online in less than two years.

  30.  @NoGufff  I have some die grinders. They're kind of expensive. For a cheap rotary tool drywall zip cutters are handy. I like the extra power. I've had a couple Dremels fail on me due to having anemic performance.

  35.  @chuckthomas1872  if they have a solid product it'll do OK. There's no GPUs in the low or mid range these days even worth considering. Something for the value conscious. I'm not going to spend $1,800 on a video card. Never gonna happen. I wouldn't mind getting something half decent for around $200 though.

  38. Intel already has their own Linux distribution. They even build it with their own high performance compiler. It is supposed to really be something else. It is called ClearOS. There's a website and everything. Go check it out.

  39.  @SireDragonChester  sound could be better on Linux. But as it is it is not bad once you get it working. I don't know how much development is really going into audio these days. Because it does work. Can be a bit of a trick to get it to work though. There's things you need to know. There's howtos online that explain how to troubleshoot audio issues. The quality of that info varies. If you work with it you can get it working. Just takes some doing. And that's the nature of Linux. BTW I use Realtek ALC892 hardware in this PC and it is playing right now. It is always playing. Otherwise my amp powers down due to inactivity. So I have a script that just randomly plays music from my collection running all the time. Right now it is playing Free - All Right Now.mp3 Which is all right by me. Let me tell you all about it now.

  41. Asustek is Asus. I heard they sold Asrock off a while back though. According to Wikipedia Pegatron owns Asrock now. So I guess I heard right. Asrock was originally spun off by Asus to compete in the consumer market against other low end manufacturers. Now people think more of them. Maybe it is better today?

  42.  @PatrikKron  I've had a lot of computers over a long time and folks have given me mouse pads over the years too. Sometimes I've even bought them. For some design they had or maybe feature? And mouse pads don't really wear out. I guess they can. But some I've had for decades now.

  47. PSU specs are largely horsecrap anyways. Most PSUs cannot deliver near their specced Watts continuously. No one that fails to understand margins, derating and headroom is going to have a very good time with electronics. Your "430W" PSU likely can only deliver 380W continuously on its best day. Which is why if you actually need 350W you put a 500W supply in. Though you'll be sacrificing some efficiency for durability. Let's say you can run the 100 meter dash in 20 seconds. How'd you like to do that all day long? By the end of the day trying you'd be dead. PSUs same deal.

  48.  @amer-du6qh  but they're not rated that way or they're out and out lies. People test these things. It is the exception rather than the rule for consumer grade electronics to live up to their specifications. But you believe whatever you want to believe.

  49. It really depends on the receptacle whether the screw is grounded or not. In most residential installs they will be. But there is such a thing as isolated ground outlets. You see them in hospitals.
