  3. These students are a product of El Sistema de Orquestas Infantiles y Juveniles de Venezuela. Only until Hugo Chavez was elected by the people of Venezuela did its budget increase ten fold. What its founder Jose Antonio Abreu inculcated to these you musicians was that talent is NOT enough, but a lot of effort, dedication and hard hard work. They practice six day a week, three hours per day after school: then they finish their homework. The majority of these musician, who come from poor working class families, will not become professional musicians. Because they learned the discipline of hard hard word, they will go to the university, and become the future doctors, lawyers and engineers of Venezuela.

This could only occur in a socialist country like Venezuela. Not even Juilliard can produce what these high school kids have accomplished, and Julliard is university level and the best in the world. I think that when Gustavo Dudamel directs the Berlin Philharmonic or the Vienna Philharmonic, he must think "what is wrong with these guys. Can't they do more.'' I spoke with the usher from the San Francisco Symphony, and she had heard the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra with Gustavo Dudamel conducting. She said that Shostakovich 10th Symphony was electrifying. Gustavo Dudamel produces better music with his Venezuelan musicians than with anybody else IMHO.

There was a chronic lack of fund because the oligrachic controlled goverment stole most Venezuela's wealth. Most if not all of the families of the SBYO were hungry, no health care, unemployed and miserable. With the Bolivarian Revolution extreme poverty was eliminated and poverty reduced. They would go to their home after practice, and there would be little food. Chavez brought the benefits of the revolution to El Sistema by providing subsidized food, free education, low cost housing, and 30,000 Cuban doctors and health workers, and a massive public works with reduced unemployment.Chavez produced, for the first time an HONEST government.

  30. It is not that I ignore Maestro Abreu. Everybody acknowleges him. You must give credit to the unsung hero who NEVER gets credit, President Chavez. He has increased the budget of El Sistema by a jaw dropping 6,000%, and he has generously subsidized the families of the musicians with small cash stippend and more. That is huge, and it only happens in Venezuela and no place else.

Way richer than Venezuela, and our state government has just eliminated music education from the curriculum. However, California is #1 in prisoners. We have more prisoners than all of Western Europe. We spend $40,000/prisoner more expensive than going to Stanford.

Chavez is slandered for many things, but his is not accused of being a theif. If you include the subsidies that the families benefit from which is significant, the sums are staggering. That is why they play better than before. The Bolivarian Revolution has given hope to the people, and you hear it in the quality of their music. THE PROOF.

They have executed a difficult piece which is a challange to even professional orchestras. They did it with ease, confidence and that special Latin passion which cannot easily be replicated.
