  1. Which country has managed to rain down on imports from China? We need to be realistic here. We tried "liberating" farmers and the entire country was brought standstill. Can India compete with the Chinese economies of scale? Ford/GM left India because they simply don't know how to sell their products at Maruti-like prices. Can India provide manufacturing firms a direct railway line to ports like the Chinese? Nope. WE CANNOT. The consolidation of the Muslim votes also has the effect of reverse polarization of Hindu votes. The key to 7RCR lies with the 272 direct INC vs. BJP battlegrounds. The rest won't see a swing beyond 20 seats and will count only in extreme events. Irrespective of who is joining the alliance, BJP still needs to sink the INC for itself to come on top.

  16. I think instead of "One nation, One poll", it would be wiser to implement "One day, One poll". It has become a dull and fear mongering election. Congress campaign is largely directionless. On the other hand, BJP seems to be all over the place without one clear tether. Given INC's structural weakness, it appears to be a BJP vs BJP election. Either last minute harakiri will sink the BJP, or the demoralized opponents will lose hands-down to grant BJP its wish of "400 paar".

It is likely to be temporary and once wedding season kicks in, Govt will reverse it. Some level of smuggling will happen but it won't be too high. The move is aimed to arrest the decline of the Rupee. The tax collection will shore up revenues. We had many unexpected expenses this year. Windfall tax was also brought in for similar reasons.

  31. I think we need to cool it down with the usage of terms like "Big Bang" or "Big ticket" reforms. I think we need to make peace with the fact that we won't be able to fully replicate the China model. Our growth will have to be driven by steadily growing domestic demand, investments esp FDI, and a little exports. Uttar Pradesh has started pulling in it's weight. Modi's Infra push is fetching us investments, services and factories. We don't have the China like human capital and it's one aspect that take years to make.
