  3. I think the biggest problem with caseless ammo is always going to be production costs and replacement of existing ammo stocks. We have about 125 years of experience producing cased ammo and and have gotten production costs down to ridiculously low prices. That's a big deal when a production contract for 40 million rounds ins't unusual. Having to tool up for producing caseless ammo and cucking the hundreds of millions of 5.56 rounds we have in inventory just isn't cost effective when caseless ammo is one of those "gee whiz" kind of solutions to a problem that doesn't exist.

  4. I'm a ham radio operator. That harpoon gun would be fantastic for launching a wire antenna over the biggest branch of the tallest tree in your vicinity. I wonder if this would count as discharging a firearm in city limits?

  7. The biggest problem with water cooled MG's was the tank getting holed by a stray round or shrapnel. Without the water jacket, the gun was reduced to firing nothing but short bursts before the barrel overheated. The other issue is water supply itself. Even in areas where water was available, it had to be put in cans and lugged to the gun since it boiled off about two gallons an hour with intermediate rates of fire and more like five gallons with continuous fire. Even in areas with plentiful water, it was common for the soldiers to urinate into water tins and use the urine for cooling since it obviated lugging cans down to the water supply and back In desert areas, urine was the primary coolant supply. One of the upsides in areas where water was used as a coolant was each gun provided about a gallon of very hot water when the action was over so the guys were able to do some washing up and shaving with hot water that didn't require a fire with the attendant smoke that gave away a position.

  9. Most intermediate caliber rifles of the period used stripper clips and five round magazines. I can't imagine there would have been much of a question about that round performing in the same manner, It was just an obsolete loading method the Swiss used when most other countries had long abandoned it.

  11. Laird, Rockhumper is mostly correct about gun values. Guns don't always gain value any more than other commodities. S&W model 29 is a good example. It's the "dirty Harry" .44 Magnum, and S&W couldn't keep up with demand in the early to mid-70's. The list price was $750 but many new in the box guns were going for $2,000. Those same guns can be bought for $850 to $1,000 in good condition, not much of a return from an investment held 45 to 50 years. Good guns will generally at least keep pace with inflation, and buying truly rare variants quickly before it becomes generally known can bring a nice return.

  13. The hammer price was $21,750. The buyer had to pay an extra 10% auction fee so about $23,500 all together. I suspect two people wanted this real bad and there was a bidding war. While the gun is fairly rare, that's still a very high price for a current service military rifle. If its just going in a collection, the follow on cost is nil but, as a shooter, you're looking at $40 mags and steel case ammo that's about twice as much as standard .223 brass. As Ian said, using the 62 grain brass case ammo was a prescription for failure to feed and extract problems. Compared to the Steyr Aug with optics for about $2,500, this is a pretty finicky and expensive piece as a shooter.

  14. It's too bad the extractor didn't operate when the gun broke apart like what we see with a Webley. It may have been more successful without the extra extraction step. Still, it was a very modern revolver for the times.

  20. This was made when the S&W Model 3 DA revolver was already an international success. This is one of those guns designed by an engineer to show he could do it. It seems like it never had any realistic hope of sales, it was too large, too complicated, and, I'm sure, too expensive. The only thing I can assume is this was made to get around S&W and Colt revolver patents.

  27. At least every sergeant's unit would need one of these. In a large department, that's potentially millions of dollars worth of rounds. My department trialed these when Taser was developing the round. It did a good job, having enough force to knock a suspect down, or at least to make it hurt like a bitch, even if the the electrical connection failed. It had a lot of innovative ideas, but the cost was going to be astronomical, and Taser hadn't even yet developed a training round. This kind if thing will return someday in light of the widespread rioting this year.

  31. I remember the days in 1965 when I could buy a complete Boys outfit including wood case, a couple mags, 20 rounds of ammo, a cleaning kit, tool kit, the bipod, and the skids, all for about $100. How I wish I would have picked up one then

  33. It has no feed ramp and no extractor. There's no way that a Ruger rotary mag will work reliably. My Ruger 10-22 will fire hundreds of rounds in a session, but that's because the rifle was built to handle the tricky feeding of the rotary mag. Without an extractor, the case won't get out of the way before another round tries to get in the chamber. I've seen the same thing with cheap aftermarket mags in the 10-22. The choice of magazine was the real downfall for this gun...well, in addition to all the other weird "features".

  34. Thanks for these WWI fortification videos, Ian. I can't imagine any war in the past three centuries that was worse to fight for the common soldier. Hunkered down inside that concrete and steel with hundreds of artillery rounds landing every minute with no place to run. If you survived the initial bombardment, you knew the next thing coming were waves of the enemy and hand to hand combat in the trenches. I think I would have thought seriously of suicide and getting it over with.

  35.  @Kampfhamster81  I'm not Swiss so I only know what I read. My understanding was the rifle had to be kept somewhere in the house under lock and key. Maybe that's some kind of closet rather than a safe. The question remains - where is the bolt kept? If the rifle isn't secured against theft, how is the bolt any more secure?

  36.  @franzschmid9079  It seems long past the day that 500,000 Swiss soldiers streaming out of their houses with a rifle and 50 rounds of ammo are really going to be fighting off invaders anyway. Keep them at an armory or some other base where soldiers will have to go to pick up other equipment anyway. It seems like a Swiss tradition that just won't die.

  38. I used to teach map reading. the easiest way I found to teach people how to read a topo map waws have them use cardboard and glue to construct a 3D model of the a map. GPS and satellite photos aside, knowing how to read a topo map is still basic to being able to navigate off concrete.

  40. A working home production handgun would have held obvious advantages for countries with international arms embargoes against them. Why they chose stainless steel castings for a gun that was not going to have much in the way of sales outside the area is a mystery. Selling a gun with poor rifling as a feature is kind of an uphill battle in the best of times.

  42. Seems like an ideal starting place for a good machine pistol. Not the heaviest bullet but you could throw a lot of lead down range and not run out of ammo very quickly.

The problem is that many of the people that could afford the tour couldn't tolerate the altitude and many of the people that could tolerate the altitude don't have the kind of money a tour like this would cost. Kind of a Catch-22, and it's one of the reasons Italian WWI tours aren't very popular.

  45.  @ScottKenny1978  I understand that, but the US had millions of 1903 Springfields and 1917 Enfields on hand as well. That didn't stop the Army from standardizing on the Grand in 1937. I also realize the Axis armies mostly had bolt actions in service most of the war. Again, that doesn't explain why the US took the jump and the other countries, but especially Britain, did not.

  46.  @ScottKenny1978  At least as many people were unemployed in Britain during the Depression as in the US, so I find that explanation hard to accept. As far as a walking fire rifle, that must have had appeal to every army, so why was the US the only one adopt the self loader as standard before WWII? I keep reading why the M-1 was invented, not why is was the only issued as standard to a large army. I'm still interest in particular why it took the British so long to come to the same conclusion, even as they started fighting guerilla wars against opponents armed with the likes of the AK-47 and surplus StG 44s.

  47.  @ScottKenny1978  Whoa, wait a minute. The RN didn't have fire resistant bulkheads on ships in 1982? I've been an amatuer naval historian for about fifty years and never heard of such a thing. And how exactly would a bulkhead be made fireproof? The nature of a steel bulkhead is such that it's already about as fireproof as it's ever going to get. Every RN warship in service in 1982 had steel bulkheads. The only aluminum in use was for some superstructure components, and there's no evidence the they contributed to the sinking or fires on any of those ships. I'm going to need a link before I buy into that. The uS Congress was famous for being the most penny pinching legislature on earth. They never wanted to spend money when there was any way to avoid it. The M-1 was also not a cheap gun to make, especially when compared t the 1903. To some extent, this was part of the many make work programs initiated during the Depression, but the Army was able to convince some of their powerful friends on the Armed Services Committee that a self loading rifle could save money if we had to enlist few men, with each man having the firepower of two riflemen carrying the 1903. Maybe the British never made that pitch to the government? The British saw war as closer in the horizon that the US since we expected to remain neutral even if war broke out, yet we had the better battle rifle in terms of firepower. I've still yet to see a cogent explanation for this.

The idea of a 10 round capacity was one of the goals, but having the entire 10 rounds loaded from a single enbloc clip. This worked with the original .276 round, but the 30.06 was just enough larger the designers couldn't find a way to make enough room in receiver for ten rounds without having to make the floor plate extend below the bottom of the rifle, something they wanted to avoid, since a smooth lower profile made it easier to shoulder and stack the rifle. Thus, the eight round clip was the compromise
