Dang, the muzzle climb on full auto seems pretty bad for 5.56, but at least the gun works.

@zombieranger3410 "to move around quietly in a place trying not to be seen or heard, such as an animal does when hunting" In this case, it's hunting old guns as prey without letting on to the owner the real value of what he may have in stock.

Well, that sucks.

A heavy, not very accurate, and not very comfortable semi automatic copy of an MP-38 for $5000 and up, depending on country. I think I'd spend the money on a real historic firearm instead.

Colt had metallic cartridge revolvers out by 1871. I really don't understand how a double barrel pistol could have sold well in 1877.
1
Well, everyone has their own idea of a fun way to spend the weekend. :-)

That thing looks more steampunk than yesterday's weird pistol.
1
It's videos like this that got you a million subs. Congratulations.
1
And just when I thought I'd have seen just about every useless variation of a gun ever made, along comes a steampunk Sten gun.
1
Maybe it just doesn't matter with this series, but the auto translate does a terrible job. I hope this makes more sense to Russian speakers.

I'm glad there are subtitles.

The ammo even sounds too hot. I guess the Turk's idea was just to deafen the opposition.

The General Motors FM-1/2 version of the Grumman F4F Wildcat was used on escort carriers to hunt and kill German subs. The number of .50 caliber guns was reduced to four from six since the Navy found four guns was more than sufficient to seriously damage or sink a sub. The main advantage was so many more rounds could be carried with four instead of six guns, and that gave the aircraft enough ammo to continuously engage a surfaced sub, cause enough damage to keep it on the surface, and then sink it with a combination of machine guns fire and the six rockets carried by most FM's. Gun camera films of them attacking a German sub with "only" four guns shows the power of the Browning .50.

The most reliable magazine I've ever uses is the rotary mag for my Ruger 10-22. I bought mine in 1964 when I turned 17, and I've run at least 5,000 rounds through the rifle since then. I have two mags I swap out every so often, but they are the original two mags I bought in 1964. I've recently supplemented them with a 30 round Ruger magazine. In all that time, I've never had any failure associated with the magazine, and both my original mags still run today just like when I shot my first rounds through them.

And so it starts. Instead of Ian giving us compact and knowledgeable videos about guns and gun history, we will have Othais rambling on enough to make this a one hour and fourteen minute video. This collaboration is going to be a long term disaster for Forgotten Weapons.

I wonder what Marston would think of the whole concept of "steampunk"?

I'd really like to see some testing on the various type of surplus 7.62x39 ammo. There must be more of that available as surplus than all the other surplus combined.
1
I'm glad you're one of the authors, Ian. While i don't dispute Larry Vicker's gun knowledge, I find his writing in books where he was the only author were not easy to follow.

What the heck are all those white stripes for? Disassembly reminds me of trying to get out the motherboard in an old HP laptop I used to own. It really looks like it was supposed to be a high tech rendition of a zip gun made in a garage somewhere.
1
DeVon Taruex Damn autocorrect. You'll be sorry when I can come back from the grave 25 years from now and go on a shooting spree!
1
ROF from the magazine sounds almost identical to the belt feed.

Having only telescopic sights make sense for a civilian hunting rifle. I don't know that it makes much sense for the security market. Most shots in that environment will be snap shots at fairly close range, an ideal situation for iron sights with maybe some tritium sights. A telescopic sight would be a liability in that circumstance.

Apparently there were metallurgy problems with the gun. The would break extractors and firing pins regularly, but only in below freezing weather. The raid on Columbus occured on March 9, 1916. I don't know what the actual weather was that day but Columbus is relatively warm in winter. The average low for March is 39. The guns may have run well because the weather was more to their liking.

@Schmidt54 Well, English is no walk in the park for a non-native English speaker to learn either, and English can be a very convoluted language. One of the reasons I like Spanish is most of it is straightforward, except for the things they have imported from English, except for that whole gender thing, something that gave me no end of trouble with German too.
1
@Schmidt54 You write better and have a better command of English than 99% of the native speakers I know. You're right, it is personal investment of time, talent, and sweat that really determines how good you'll be at any language. I think the difference in Europe is you can drive eight hours and be in three different countries speaking three different languages. Learning different languages is almost a necessity. Over here, I can drive for five days and still be in the same country and speaking mostly the same language. People in the US don't see it as necessity to learn another language, and they are the poorer for it.
1
@gustavmeyrink_2.0 At least Italian isn't stuck with genders for everything like we see in French or German. That's interesting that you say English is the easiest language to learn. Of my non-native English speaking friends, about half agree and half say it;s really terrible to learn. English has more non-standard spelling, pronunciation, a grammar rules then almost any major language. The only way to learn those is memorize them. I suspect those good at memorization think English is an easy language to learn.
