  4.  @linda1lee2  And I've done safety work (ISO 26262, etc) on automated cars. You have to drive (or accurately simulate the driving) of about 5 BILLION miles before you can have a 90% confidence that that individual build of the software with that individual hardware configuration is safer than a human driver. The cowboys in Silicon Valley, at least before I left, had nowhere near this level of simulation capability, nor did they have any intention of ever developing it as far as I could see -- which is one of the reasons I left.

Charlie Cook used to have an interactive map on his website for 2020, that had sliders for demographics -- you could see what happened if, say, the African-American vote only went 80% blue, or if the Hispanic vote went only 55% blue. The results are shocking. Polling is more of an art than a science now, with pollsters adding various "weights" to their numbers. If Zeihan the Analyst had gone this way to critique polling, I'd have thought it was a bit better. Instead, we have Peter the Deep State Mouthpiece, which is less valuable.

  14.  @davidlemons5650  Yeah, he's really great knowing what kind of a hand countries / regions / etc were dealt geographically, even if I'm not always convinced by his conclusions about how they'll play their cards. I would put him up on the level with Jared Diamond in terms of geographical exposition. I'd still look to Walter Russell Mead, Niall Ferguson, or Thomas Sowell for the cultural factors that make countries what they are, though.

  23.  @tk80mufa5  Er, the Opium Wars were a couple hundred years ago now, fought primarily to maintain balance of trade with China due to the popularity of tea (and the critical nature of tea duties to the British budget). There really isn't a "tax base" argument you can make for today's drug trade. That position is staked out by the "legalize / regulate / tax" crowd.

  28. Wouldn't it make more sense for Russia to sabotage someone else's pipeline? That would help get across Putin's point that the physical world still matters in ways that the cyber world does not, without removing a possible carrot from the negotiating table. We have to take into account the idea that whoever did this was not being entirely rational or sensible when they did, although Zeihan makes the point fairly well that Putin isn't anywhere near as irrational as his opponents make him out to be.

  44.  @hg2.  I'm not sure you recognize the reference. William Jennings Bryan gave a famous oration known as his "Cross of Gold" speech, back in 1896. He argued that the gold standard was harming regular Americans, and that silver should also be used as a form of currency. You should look into that "bimetallism" debate, and the interaction of currency with the boom / bust economic cycles of the late 19th century. This is not a new debate, nor is it done justice with just a simple theory or slogan. We've got a good deal of history we can refer to, for evidence of what happens when various policies are implemented. I agree with you that fiat currencies have extreme drawbacks. I might even agree with you that a return to the gold standard would be better. However, you're going to be more persuasive if you can present a bit more background on the subject, like Zeihan does with his videos here.
