BramSLI1 You hit the nail on the head about the Soviet system. It consolidated all social, economic and political powers into one entity, the government, there was no checks or balances. Leading to its total descent into totalitarianism, especially under Stalin. Oddly enough, one of the tenants of Marxian-Leninism was that the state was going to be dissolved away over time by the government, leading to a stateless society (communism).
Of course this never happened... However, I find here an ugly parallel in American libertarianism, especially voluntarism. They expect that a government completely under the control of private interest will somehow voluntarily dissolve it powers, leading to the a stateless, anarcho-capitalist world. (The last term being a total oxymoron.) This idea is even more delusional than the Marxian-Leninist idea, as this model of supposed anarchism keeps the capitalist class structures and even glorifies and praises the most sociopathic behaviors in the pursuit of profit.
As of now social democracy with democratic socialist elements is really the best system mankind has come up with.
