Their motives are generally some combination of a) Supporting whichever side the US is not on because of "imperialism" while ignoring Russia's long history of empire building and genocide, b) having overdosed on Kremlin-produced conspiracy juice about proxy wars and Ukraine being a Nazi state led by a Jew, c) somehow believing Russia is still Communist rather than a hyper-capitalist mafia state or d) Being "peace at any price" appeasers who hate war so much they think Ukraine should just give Russia what they want. Again, this is super easy to find. Look up George Galloway for a start, he's a fairly prominent one. Swallow your pride, accept that you're wrong on this one, and grow as a person.

And these people live in a society where they can freely access opposing viewpoints and verifiable explanations of why they're wrong. Now imagine what it's like when every school, and every media channel is also promoting that conspiracy theory and anyone who might contradict it is keeping quiet because they can't be sure if you'll report them to the secret police.

  20. Russia has invaded it's neighbors 7 times since Putin came to power. Each time he snatches some land and then is suddenly all about peace and "ready to negotiate". A short while later, he picks up where he left off. He counts on useful idiots in the West rolling over in the name of peace when he barks threats loudly enough.

One thing we got very wrong in pop culture portrayals of Russian soldiers was believing that a climate of unsparing hardship and brutality produced superior soldiers, brave and pitiless killers. When in reality, it produces selfish, undisciplined and traumatised war criminals who are kind of crap in an actual fight.
