@cykeok3525 The hot gases escaping at the muzzle are just that. Once the powder is converted into an expanding hot gas, it continues to burn until the projectile uncorks, then the hot gas meets atmosphere and dissipates. There are some tiny residual particulates of cellulose still on fire that will exit the muzzle, but the nitrates convert within the first 0.3 to 0.4 milliseconds. There are pistol length gas system AR-15s in 5.56 that don't have fire shooting out the ejection port. The muzzle exit pressure and visible flame is higher due to proximity to the chamber, but the gas system isn't being fed and clogged with powder. Chamber temp and pressure is so high that you get a full conversion pretty rapidly with the tested and rated powders. It is possible to use incorrect powders that will not fully convert due to burn rate. This is one of the main reasons powder and ammunition manufacturers do testing.

@cykeok3525 What happens inside of a barrel is a deflagration with reduced pressure and heat dissipation as the projectile moves forward, because volume increases and distribution of the deflagration wave across the surface area and mass of the bore/barrel diminishes the pressure and heat. Peak pressure happens at the center of the propellant column, and that’s where we place sensors to measure peak pressure. If the propellant continued to burn or increase in pressure forward of the chamber, we would see that on instrumented test breeches, but we don’t. Peak pressure manifests itself over the center of the powder column in the chamber.

I've shredded through vehicles with 5.56 repeatedly, but it is limited in terminal performance after cutting through certain parts of the vehicle. 6.5 Grendel is the one to beat in this regard from the AR-15 frame.

Can you hit a coke can with your 10/22 all day at 400yds?

It’s not unburnt powder causing muzzle flash. This is a myth and misunderstanding of the physics of ballistics. Flash is caused by the hot gases escaping when the projectile uncorks from the muzzle. The powder has already been converted from a contained particulate mass of nitrated cellulose into an extremely hot gas during combustion in the chamber. The powder is fully converted within no more than a few inches from the chamber, depending on the burn rate, propellant volume, bore volume, and projectile mass. Imagine trying to run the AR-15 gas system with unburnt powder.

Oversize boots will trash your feet during movement though. Creates abrasion and hot spots really fast, exacerbated by the extra weight you're carrying. Source: Career in dismounted Infantry/Recon/Sniping from 1994-2016, including Korea, 2005-2016 in Finland, lots of hiking in CO and UT, to include regular winter survival exercises. This is all carrying common load bearing equipment and weapons. Loose boots with layered socks work better for more static or limited walking scenarios as you describe.

@eamonnholland5343 I gotcha man. I've been chasing the boot rabbit for a long, long time.

@eamonnholland5343 If you hot wash your boots, you can get them to fit you better. Hot wash, do a 3 mile casual walk, then mink oil them. This is leather of course, not synthetic.

BTDT, "future" and ".308" don't belong in the same sentence from everything I've seen shooting M14s, M21s, AR-10s, and SR-25s over the past 30 years. High Performance Intermediate Cartridges is where it's at for balance between on-target performance and sight picture/self-spotting/mag capacity.

@investigativeoutcomes9343 Barrel burners are normally high chamber pressure with a high ratio of case diameter to bore diameter. 6mm AR or 6mm ARC are 50-52ksi chamber pressure cartridges. Barrel life should be in the 4000-8000rd region, dependent on steel hardness and shoot schedule. 22 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, .243 Win, 6.5x284, any of the Weatherby's, .300 Win Mag, etc. are barrel-burners. They all operate at over 60ksi chamber pressure, and most are over-bored.
