Ah, the S-400... as someone from the DCS community, there's a meme with the Grim Reapers having a gajillion of "Can XYZ defeat an S-400 site?" videos which usually goes awry thanks to how it's totally overmodelled (being a mod and not part of DCS itself) and them not being the best DCS pilots on the planet. The best answer to the question "What could possibly defeat it?" is just "A realistic simulation." :D Will watch later :)

  10. One more in the same line: Russia's been sending the most heavy weapons to the Ukrainian army so far (literally hundreds of tanks, artillery units and IFVs being captured)... and they went from having the 2nd largest army in the world to having the 2nd largest army in Ukraine :)

  13.  @xvy333  It takes more than just a low freq / high wave length system to do that. They knew the route and the exact times and managed to just get the exact moment when that 117 had it's doors open. Doesn't make the SA-3 an all out "Stealth Fighter killer".

  14. 262 was the first both in serial production with significant numbers and in active service. That's what mostly counts. Also, there have been a few P-80s stationed and operating in Italy by the end of January in 1945 AFAIK. To me they're all the pioneers of the jet age.

  17.  @wigon  This. Also there was the F-111 with the Pave Tack which was a retractable pod, but integrated into the airframe as it if was part of it. That whole thing took up the bomb bay, though, so the LGBs had to go on wing pylons instead.

Also, it has been featured in MicroProse and EA flight sims since 1987, the actual F-117 appeared in 1989 for the first time in one of those Chuck Yeager's sims IIRC, and definitely in MicroProse's F-117 Stealth Fighter 2.0 in 1991. Around that time, the F-22 also started popping up in those games... and we had some sort of X-32 design in ATF in 1995 and both the actual X-32 and X-35 in Eidos' JSF in 1997.

What about using that rocket to bring that F-15E(X, whatever) to its operations area in no time in order to increase its range and reaction time? I mean, that'd save them all the fuel enroute so they'll either end up with more playtime or higher range while at the same time "getting there" in so much less time... you might be able to detect even the stealthiest aircraft, but could you react sufficiently to a Strike Eagle that enters the Danger Zone at M5+ and is going to drop a truckload of Wickmids on your assets before you even notice?

So the most vital thing of modern hypersonic missiles being the lofting trajectory to get fast at altitude, primarily for increasing range and their capability to manoeuver midcourse. Nevertheless, in the terminal phase those get as vulnerable as any other thing.

  39. The race for speed is all on again, while trying to keep things stealthy. Temperature and friction are real factors, but supercruise-capable fighters like the Raptor and Eurofighter show where it's going.

  43. They didn't have 20mm, just .50 cal. But anyway, you'd always have 4-6 guns pointed at you from a single B-17 when attacking from behind and that especially adds up within a full box formation (that's 12 bombers in 4 sections of 3 each). Keep the time frame exposed to that firepower as short as possible while trying to bring as much 20 and 30mm in as possible.

  45.  @thepilotman5378  That's what I was saying with the acceleration thing. Takes ages to get there and turning in a fight will shed that energy, so you'd really have to be a very patient and well-aiming BnZ style pilot knowing how to use energy advantage without burning it off by turning too far into the evading opponent. The P-51 can get dangerous quicker than most would imagine. Especially with the sheer mass of .50 cal it can hose down range. A lucky hit can be enough to take out either of the engines which were rather exposed and very vulnerable.
