We are not a democracy- we might have democratic principles but we are ruled by a representative republic.

@russell4824 America is not a democracy - never, ever has been. While we have democratic principles, we are ruled by a representative republic. That means that we the people vote for people to represent us. We don't represent ourselves - as a straightforward democracy would do (as a matter of fact, there is not ONE country in the world today that is ruled by a straightforward democracy). When we vote in a presidential election we are "indirectly" voting for the president - we are "directly" voting for the democrat or republican electors who together represent the population of that particular state - the amount of electors is based on the amount of people living in that state. The more sparse the population the less the electors. If more people vote democrat in each state, then the democrat candidate wins ALL the electors of that state - both the democrat and republican ones. If the electoral college did not exist then the presidential candidates would concentrate all their campaign efforts on states with the highest population and screw the ones with the lowest population - our founding fathers recognized this potential problem and solved it by creating the electoral college. They knew that without it, the states with the lowest populations would remain unrepresented. The candidate would think "who gives a $hlt about them." If we rely on the popular vote, the states with the highest populations would be the only ones speaking for the rest of America - they would be the only ones voting for the president. The electoral college exists so that EVERYONE in the U.S. is fairly represented.

The green new deal??? AOC said that if we don't implement a green program we will be in dire trouble in 12 years. What she is too DUMB to understand is that unless the countries with the highest and most toxic levels of pollution don't do anything about theirs (China, India, Pakistan, Egypt - to name a few), we will STILL be in deep doo-doo in 12 years - whether or not we implement OUR green program. The pollution in those countries doesn't just hover over their land - it affects the rest of the world. I believe that climate change is real, but I don't want to be taxed - I don't want government to dig their filthy hands in my pockets for a green program and still face dire consequences because those other countries don't want to do their part! I know our government knows about this, which leads me to question, WHY DO THEY REALLY WANT OUR MONEY????

@strumbum946 the killer is that if we ever decided to do away with the electoral college and those states that are now blue become red, the liberals will start CRYING (as they usually do) to have the electoral college reinstated. Most liberals are convinced that all blue states have always been blue. LOL. The truth is they keep changing. California has only been blue since the early 90s. Prior to that it was red. And with the way things are going in CA now, it's likely to go red one day in the near future. The dems are destroying that state and the people are starting to rebel.

States keep changing their political position. For example, up until the early 90s CA was strictly a red state. If we ever decided to do away with the electoral college (it could never happen, but if we did) and those states that are now blue become red, the liberals will start CRYING (as they usually do) to have the electoral college reinstated. With the way things are going in CA now, it's likely to go back to red one day in the near future. The dems are destroying that state and the people are starting to rebel.

@Tyson Mars I don't believe people really understand what a democracy is all about. The word "democracy" combines the dêmos (which means "people") and krátos (which means "power"). There is a reason why our founding fathers refused to establish a straightforward democracy. They didn't want to put the power directly in the hands of the people. I really would like to know what the heck schools are teaching nowadays. I'm a historian so I know these things by virtue of my studies. Today no country in the world is ruled by a straightforward democracy. None. We'd be in deep $hit if we put power in the hands of the people. "We the people" elect officials and THEY are the ones who represent us - that's why we are called a representative republic (or a constitutional republic; a Constitutional Federal Republic). We don't represent or rule ourselves - the way they did in ancient Athens - where it eventually failed. The only power we, the "demos", have is the power to vote for elected officials. These officials use a system of checks and balances designed to prevent chaos. THIS is what needs to be addressed because it's obviously not working. Straightforward democracies are dangerous - always have been throughout history - they have always led to mob rule - there are a lot of nuts out there.
