  1. Merkel is not up for re-election. That means she is ok with wasting more of her voters’ money in order to make the rest of her term easier. Germany was actually expected to be one of the frugal until she got lazy and made a u-turn.

  2.  @weareallbornmad410  Remember that the best run parts of “Poland” were those run by Prussia and Austria. They are still, to this day, the parts with the best roads. (And a large part of the actual Poland is lost in the East... why don’t the nationalistic Poles never make any noises about that?)

  3. There is actually very little bureaucracy in the EU. Agricultural subsidies, regional development subsidies, and various economic support for Southern/Eastern Europe takes up most of the EU budgets. We are trying to make the EU more of a global player, which requires a more unified foreign policy (External Action Service) and a stronger military that is less dependent on the US (look closer at Thierry Breton’s portfolio). It also requires things like Galileo and Sentinel satellites. These very sensible things cost a lot less than the agricultural subsidies and the stuff we do to compensate for Greece’s, Spain’s, and Italy’s mismanagement of their economies.

  5. So? I’m quite willing to see France die :) (When do they man up and use the military against the idiots who routinely block all traffic in France because they want more money or longer vacations?)
