  2. Only people who were adult in the 70's know... and probably only those who lived in or near a big city. There were around 13-14 million people in Afghanistan in 1979 and 40 million today. In other words, we are talking about a minority of the people who were born around 1960 or earlier and there aren't a lot of those people. Googling for "afghanistan population pyramid", we can see that people of the right age are around 5% of the population -- and only a minority of those actually have any real experience with Western values. People don't really get old over there + 40-50% were born after 2000. And who brought those modern, Western values to Afghanistan? The Soviet Union. And who helped the Islamists? The US... I think this is the clearest case of the US being on the wrong side of a Soviet/US proxy war.

  5. Well, the UK was really like that in the second Boer war and the UK really was on the wrong side in the First World War, did it’s best to do the wrong thing in the late 30’s and did work to ensure the Soviets won. Not a great record, really.

  6. It’s possible McCarthy was overzealous but we now know that it can’t have been by much. It turns out he was right about many of the supposedly innocents. (We also know that he had access to intelligence documents about his targets. They were not randomly chosen.)

  7.  @orzorzelski1142  GLONASS is not very precise + Russia has never been good at mass manufacturing of electronics, so they don't have a decent number of home-grown GLONASS receivers. They could use cheap smartphones but that leads to other issues -- people phoning home and saying the war is going badly + too many leaks regarding position, strength, plans, logistics...

  18.  @zxyatiywariii8  how much of an opiate a given person can tolerate varies wildly, even for people who take the same dose every day for years because they take them against chronic pain. Sometimes those patients just keel over from an overdose despite having taken exactly the same dose as they have taken every day for years. We don’t really know why.

  25.  @FreeSalesTips  no, not anywhere close. Nuclear bombs need some quite fancy mechanisms to make sure the bomb doesn’t tear itself apart too soon during the explosion. If it does, you’ll only get a tiny explosion and some radiation. Part of it is a conventional explosion that pushes the fissile material together while it starts doing the fission. Another part, for plutonium bombs, is a neutron source that can blast lots of neutrons of the right speed (wrong speed = they don’t split any atoms) at he fissile material. This is often supplemented with neutron reflectors and big lumps of heavy metal to make it harder to push the fissile material apart. Nuclear reactors have none of this. They cannot blow up. Some of them can create lots of hydrogen and oxygen gas which can then explode. That’s why they have super thick concrete boxes around the reactors to contain such explosions. Chernobyl did not have that.

  29.  @guestimator121  it’s about precise onboard clocks (which GLONASS doesn’t have), it’s about precise orbit info (which GLONASS does have in and around Russia), it’s about good compensation for varying transmission speeds through the atmosphere (particularly when the satellites are far away and the signal goes through more air)… I don’t believe GLONASS is particularly good at the latter. Am I still full of crap? We can literally measure how good the 4 big systems are… GLONASS really isn’t very good. Shall we talk modulation, frequencies, and equations… or do you just want to write words you can’t spell?

That’s because protein is built out of “Lego bricks” called amino acids and every amino acid contains a nitrogen atom — and melamine plastic is also built of “Lego bricks” with nitrogen atoms in them. It’s a really old test (from before plastic) that was originally invented in Denmark at our Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University to increase the quality of our milk (by ensuring that farmers were actually paid more for good milk and less for poor milk). Modern protein tests can’t be cheated as easily.

They are not very precise and they don't seem to have a lot of missiles left, though. Their soldiers definitely cannot strike at will. I expect them to be worn so much worn down in a week or two that they can only move backwards or surrender or die. That's the situation in most of the Russian occupied territories. The situation in Crimea is different -- Russia might actually have real support in the population there and winning it back will likely be hard.

  47. This is the best documented war in world history by a long shot. A lot of the destroyed tanks etc have been photographed and the photos have been uploaded. There is a blog (oryxspionkop) that tracks them and counts them. The pics are there. It did happen. It's not going well for Russia.
