  3. Karsten Topp A barleycorn is a third of an inch. UK shoe sizes use an ingenious and extremely clever system based on standard lasts for men, women, and children. The standard last has a size number (not based on its actual length). Shorter and longer have lower/higher numbers based on how many barleycorns they deviate from the standard lasts. Nothing could be simpler. Certainly not using the actual length in centimeters!

  6. ChristianIce That’s normal. It’s the rest of us that are weird, and we have only become weird in the last few decades. The gas and electrical companies tend to know who lives where.... so if you need to identify yourself at the local council (Gemeinde or kommune, roughly), you bring a couple of your latest gas/electricity bills.
