  4. It is ironic that the movie had already changed the original ending of the novel. Those who have read the book will know that the actual ending has him shooting himself and waking up in heaven. "Heaven" has white walls and angels dressed in white. It is of course a mental hospital. The movie ending, which shows him killing Durden, was a Hollywood happy ending. Edit: Gosh, that escalated quickly.

  8. I used to teach English in a public junior high school in Japan. We went on a summer camp to the hills. The kids, aged 14 or 15, all slept in tents in the woods and the adult in proper beds in the main building. In the evening we cracked open beers while the kids ran crazy in the woods. An American co-worker observed that in the US, kids would never be left unsupervised like that. The lead Japanese teacher shrugged his shoulders and knocked back his beer.

  45. The bombing of civilian targets was an awful thing to do, but it was the planned industrialised attempt to exterminate a whole race of people based on racist lies which was uniquely evil. The bombings of of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had a very clear strategic goal and was successful - it brought an end to the war with no more casualties. The bombings you mention killed tens of thousands. The death camps exterminated millions.
