  2.  @1369Stiles  - right. I presume you meant in the context of movies with different endings to the books. It was quite satisfying as you don't know that he's been digging a tunnel. However, the it was totally implausible that he could have done it behind a poster over twenty years and never been detected or changed cell.

  3.  @1369Stiles  - it's been some time since I last saw it. Why couldn't you have been a bit more specific? Sigh. The meeting on the beach was a bit inevitable in Hollywood terms and felt like it was there to tick a box. Was a bit pedestrian. I think I would have preferred Fight Club with the original ending, but I understand that that wasn't going to be as commercial for a Brad Pitt movie. Yes, they are different mediums, but the change in Fight Club was an extremely material change and perhaps only necessary to satisfy a wider viewing public - hence the Hollywood happy ending.

  9.  @andyxfish  I'm white but no one has suggested I be a member of the Supreme Court. If I were an eminent lawyer, I might have a chance. That's the main qualification. The reason why most of the top lawyers are white is obviously down to historical racial prejudice, and not having a more diverse supreme court (and other levers of power) embeds this further.

  46. I think the Republicans would have moved slightly more to the centre of they knew they always had to appeal to a majority so that you would still end up with a two party democracy. NB Actually George W. Bush got a majority in his second term.

Can you name a democracy that fits your obscure definition? Power is conditionally held by the people and delegated to representatives through democratic elections. It is therefore a democratic country.
