Just because there isn't one simple definition that everyone can agree upon doesn't make the conversation stupid and pointless, that's a lazy and anti intellectual cop out. Plenty of people in the world understand what socialism is, you just don't happen to be one of them.

@Finalblade2007 that doesn't really make any sense but no one has ever accused libertarians who support capitalism of being smart. Voting with your dollar is a myth, you can't boycott corporations if we literally hand them all the power, which is what you are suggesting. You want to take away almost all of the governments power but still want them to be powerful enough to uphold the constitution? That's a fantasy, corporations don't care about the constitutional, half the government doesn't care about constitutional rights. Corporations don't fall to money like every other citizen, that's literally never happened once. What you are suggesting doesn't make any rational Sense. Government is the problem, but we also need government to protect our rights, and we aren't going to use the government to do anything about corporations, we are just going to boycott them 😂 Yeah, that will totally work against Amazon and other billion dollar corporations, it's not like people need to eat or anything, we can just boycott the corporations we hand power to. Sorry bud, but libertarianism that still supports capitalism is just an incoherent ideology.

@dablackangel There is something powerful about unity. But historically when leftists unify, their leaders are assassinated by right wing institutions. Fred Hampton was succeeding in unifying people, he wasn't undone by leftist infighting, he was executed by the FBI and local police. Leftist infighting isn't why the right is in power, they are winning because they were already in power. If we do manage to unify it will only get harder to win, because the right is funded by billionaires and controls the state, once we stop fighting each other more of us are gonna be killed. Because the right knows that we are powerful when we unify, that's why they use all their money and power to kill anyone who genuinely tries to make it happen.

Markets and competition don't create growth or innovation, we can clearly see that is not the case under capitalism, it never has been. Bigger companies just buy out the competition and deliberately stifle innovation so they can corner and monopolize the market. You're talking out of your ass, reality doesn't support your argument. Capitalism has given us planned obsolescence and other anti consumer crap that makes corporations money and screws us over. There are a myriad of problems inherent to capitalism, it's an outdated 20th century economic system that is killing the planet and holding us back in the 21st century. We need to move beyond it. Who are the lazy people taking advantage, are you talking about trust fund kids, billionaires and overpaid executives? Somehow I think you are probably simping for that group, and think poor working class people are the lazy ones taking advantage.

@13e11even11 Are you denying that capitalism goes through boom and bust cycles and has consistently for as long as it's been our economic system? That's what they mean by it collapses cyclically, because it does. It's an inherently unstable and unsustainable economic system. Capitalism is the cause of most of the misery in the world today. We are less free today than our ancestors were, in a number of ways, because of capitalism. What you think is based on propaganda, not reality. Your idealized version of capitalism doesn't exist, has never existed, and doesn't work like that in theory. It goes against human nature, appealing only to our greed and ruthlessness, it incentivizes selfishness. It inhibits our creativity, compassion and cooperation. You know humans are a naturally cooperative species, not a competitive one right?

It's wasteful and inherently shortsighted. Profit is a bad thing to organize society around. Milton Friedman was wrong, and supported and advised totalitarian dictatorships, those kinds of governments you're supposedly against. Saying "it's complex" is not an argument, boom and bust is unstable and ruins lives, it's not hyperbolic to say that. You have no argument, you're just repeating old debunked arguments that people like Friedman popularized.

We overproduce enough food to feed everyone on earth and then some, but a third of that is wasted because we don't produce and distribute food based on human need or a desire to reduce suffering, we produce and distribute food for profit. Scarcity is manufactured for profit. Hunger is a problem we can solve but choose not to. Saying capitalism isn't responsible for most of the misery today when we allow people to die of hunger or live on the streets despite having a surplus of food and housing is ridiculous. You're embarrassing, just repeating debunked arguments from corrupt ghouls.

@13e11even11 We've separated ourselves from the natural world and put our greed and desire above it, that isn't naive, that's reality. We are not living in harmony with nature, we are destroying it faster than it can regrow and we are monetizing the destruction. Our biggest problems are ourselves and the systems we've created, not the natural world. Just because nature is brutal and wasps lay eggs inside living things doesn't mean we should act like them, we are smarter than wasps. Why do you think this is the best economic system we can come up with? Do you really think the men who invented capitalism hundreds of years ago were smarter than we are today? You obviously don't think capitalism is without its flaws, so why don't we progress our economic system to solve the flaws of the old one? Every other aspect of society, which only exists because humans tend to choose cooperation over competition, has progressed in the past century. Why not our economic system?

Communism is not when everyone gets paid the same regardless of how hard you work, that's what you are describing as happening right now, under capitalism. That's capitalism dude. That's just how wage labour works. You're paid for your time, not your labour. Under capitalism, the system we have now, you get laid the same wage regardless of how hard you work. If you work extra hard and the company makes more profit, that goes to the bosses, not to you. But if you don't work hard enough for your wage the bosses can fire you, it's lose lose. That's capitalism, and it wouldn't happen under communism. You should spend more time learning about communism, a system where you earn the full value of your labour, it would probably appeal to you. Communists and socialists are the only reason we have weekends, the 40 hour work week, minimum wage, and child labor laws.

If they just failed on their own then the richest country in the world wouldn't spend billions on trying to make them fail would they? Why did the US invade Vietnam if they were so sure communism always fails like you are claiming? They lost that war too and Vietnam is doing very well today, not a failed state. You don't know what you are talking about, you are obviously just repeating cold war propaganda that you've been told your entire life but have never checked to see if history actually shows that.
