It was right after his first spectacular presidential run flameout for plagiarizing other politicians in his speeches. One aneurysm in each hemisphere, requiring two brain surgeries, in 1988. He seemed to recover well enough, but physicians familiar with his case warned of long-term effects. An injured brain can only compensate for so long before the changes of late old age eat up its reserve, in general.
