Did not permit my baby to be circumcised in 2002, and my God--the flak I got from hospital employees! "It's dirty," one old nurse's aide told me. Later, as a nurse, I landed a job in Labor & Delivery, at a time when the circ rate was around 95%. The circ'd newborns cried all the time--especially when they'd just wet their diapers. It was a disgrace to do that to such a young person. After having to assist with a couple of circumcisions, I resigned. One of the dumbest and most often given reasons for having the baby circ'd was, "So he'll look like his dad." What???

"Phimosis" refers to an abnormally tight or constricted foreskin, I think. There's another condition called paraphimosis.

@hughx5235 lots of c ircumcisions happen because people don't realize that the foreskin isn't very retractable for years, even until puberty. My son said his finally became fully mobile after his voice changed. Hygiene for him as a baby and child was simple.

@zerotolerance2679 Not to mention that an intact penis isn't quite so harshly frictional on the female's parts. So they say. Americans my age were almost universally circumcised, so I never met one "socially". I did once date a man who chose to be circumcised at age 18, and he said having it done wasn't worth the cost and expense. Not a horrible result, but no real benefit. I laugh in the general direction of women who think uncircumcised men are "dirty". As a nurse, I've sadly had to deal with an uncounted parade of crotches, and ladies, you aren't winning the "smells like roses" contest. It would take real personal neglect and possibly an infection to make a random man on the street smell as nasty as his average female counterpart.
