When I was a runner and aspiring to run the Boston and New York marathons back in the early 80s, these marathons were already big effing deals, with the top tier being "world class" runners who had their own elite section of the marathon, complete with Nike, Adidas, New Balance, and Brooks sponsorships. They flew in from all over the world, although I don't remember any Runner's World articles fawning over Soviet runners. They obviously were still behind the Iron Curtain. My point, anyhow, is that the world class parts of these marathons attract runners from all parts of the world. It has been like this for at least 50 years.
