  1. I was an EMT for a dozen years, and anytime we had a threatened suicide or gunshot, we relied on the police to secure the scene. No civilian medic is expected to sacrifice himself to the knife & gun club.

  5.  @stuart3712  I was speaking of unsecured scenes involving gunshot wounds or people threatening suicide with a gun. Police generally secured the scene or assisted even if it was just a half-hearted suicidal overdose gesture. Sometimes, they'd issue a citation to the person because they had preëmpted emergency vehicles. I also have worked as an RN in acute-care behavioral health settings, with all kinds of suicidal, parasuicidal, and homicidal people. Each one of them, even the manipulative fakers, required some form of police involvement in the field--obviously.
