  1. FBI is problematic, but, as far as selling or patenting genetic sequences, whatevs. No one owns his DNA--he's just borrowing all of it for three score and ten.

  2. By the way, DNA companies are deep-pocketed entities to be sued by people who have been hard-done by. E.g., an anonymous sperm donor outed by recipients contacting his family members who'd spat in a tube. Another example: progeny of a sperm donor (or maybe slutty Mom sat on a cuckoo's egg). Child abruptly discovers he's not genetically related to the father who raised him. Parents sue, possibly in a class action. The human casualties of this DNA service are also going to be creating major headaches for these profiteers. Believe me. My husband and I used an anonymous sperm donor and a ton of half-siblings came out of the woodwork. One striver tracked down the anonymous donor, even though he had never spat in a test tube. I feel for the poor guy, having 28 offspring crop up. Fortunately, our donor is an unusually good sport and figured it would happen one day, but I think he's unusually gentle and kind-hearted.
