  1. The Afghan idea of government, which I think is called "jirga" is less like a formal government and more like a meeting of tribes on an ad hoc basis. I'm not surprised that taxes are an alien concept to them--so is a permanent, codified government. Why did we even think we could shoehorn them into our style? Or was our "nation building" there just a Potemkin pretext to camouflage our real purposes?

  2. I have mixed feelings about freeways. 50 years ago, you could not cross the street in my small tourist town because a US highway ran through its main street. Then they ran it as a 4-lane south of town, with one exit. It did not kill much business to do that, and now you can cross Main St. fairly easily. But the integrity of the buildings and the hustle of foot traffic downtown is long gone. You can cross the street, but there is less to walk to if you live in town and like shopping on foot as I do. I doubt the freeway bypass is wholly responsible, though. People seem to hate to walk, anymore.

  3. Our elites are just rent seekers and racketeers on a grand scale. They need to be kicked away from the troughs of the MIC, healthcare, education and other foolishly overgrown areas of the administrative octopus.
