  1. Pretty good, anyhow. I am old enough to remember Nixon absolutely cleaning McGovern's clock 5 months after Watergate broke in the news. The Dems were just that shitheaded in 1972. 2020 will rhyme, barring economic collapse.

  2. I was 15 during that election cycle, and remember the word "warmonger" dropping regularly in the commentary. Fears about Reagan escalated from there and took most of a term to subside.

  6. The Gipper at the fall of the USSR: He knew about it. I remember watching Reagan give a rare speech to the Oxford Union in 1993 or 1994. At the time, they were calling Russia and its former satellites the Confederation of Independent States, or CIS. I remember this, because Reagan flubbed reading the TelePrompTer phrase "the C.I.S." in a nonsensical way. He read it "the CIs" or "the CI's" without correcting himself. I remember thinking, "Huh. Maybe he really is a baked potato." This was about the time of his head injury from falling off a horse, and not long before he announced his diagnosis of Alzheimer's dementia. No doubt that, at least immediately surrounding his shooting and later colon surgery, Reagan had some cognitive losses and/or delirium. Possibly even objective dementia by the end of his term. But it probably wasn't very advanced in early 1989.
